From the data on the Hodgdon site, there is very little difference between the two except for about a 40 year head start for the .284 Winchester. :D So, it would seem the short fat cartridge design isn't very new at all but merely an old cartridge revisited.:shotgun:

Not that it matters much, but are they both rebated? I know the .284 is, but don't think the 7WSM is. I'll have to check it out when I get home tonight.

The difference is about 150fps.
7mm WSM has a larger internal capacity and can acheive published velocities no problem, especially if you reload, while the 284 Win lives up to published numbers it's only available in one loading (150gr.)
The up side of the 284 Win is you can do it on a .473" bolt face, while the WSM's need a .532" bolt face, so therefore you can build a 284 off of an action from a 243, or 308. The WSM's are pretty much WSM from start to finish, unless you have an old 6.5 Rem. Mag your wanting to butcher.

well, the 7wsm is starting to get noticed in benchrest circles as a really #####in 1000 yard cartridge. The 284 - well, not so much unless you neck it down to 6.5

Is there a factory 6.5mm WSM yet?

no factory 6.5 WSM as of yet

the WSM obviously has more powder capacity, and regardless of what Hodgdon states, it can push a bullet up to 200 fps faster than the 284, all things being equal.

The 284Win was so ahead of its time its not funny. Damn gunwriters talked it down for some reason and it never made it. What a great round, and I wish more factory rifles were chambered in it.....

If I had the choice, I'd take 284Win over a 7WSM any day of the week....

I don't think it was the 284 so much as the guns chambered for it
I think you're right.
The "short action" thing took a while to catch on!
The .284 is not nearly as popular as the wildcats it has spawned.

Regardless, it is a fine cartridge.....

Not me...

The whole point of the 284 was to give 280/270- performance ina a short action rifle and/or autoloader. Which it suceeds at doing.

However, I'd prefer a 280 or a 7RM or 7WSN, because performance is just as good or better, and bras more available.

Dont get me wrong- The 284 is a nice cartridge, but it doesn't do anytign a 280 won't, and the 1.5 oz weight savings in the rifle isn't a
big deal.

Without adoubt, it has KOOL factor, and that is enough reason to get a rifle chambered as such, IMHO.:D

The .284 is undoubtedly a decent cartridge and way ahead of its time. But will it perform as good as a 7WSM...nope!
Is it going to continue to be the platform of choice for wildcats... not likely with the superior performance and greater availability of the WSM's.
Let go of the past... live in the now... :slap:

I'm surprised to hear you say that! ............ I'm serious! :p

.

It really depends on the performance envelope you're looking for. The 284 is basically a 280 in a short case (7mm Express, 7mm-06, 7x64 et al), while the WSM (and the SAUM for that matter) are supposed to be a 7 Rem Mag light (which they are). If you don't need the extra speed, noise, and recoil, the 284 is a fine short action cartridge. Back in the day it was a great lightweight mountain rifle cartridge, I've built a few on Rem 600s (still have one) that were very easy to tote up and down mountain sides. The 7 WSM/SAUM just add slightly more power/speed to the equation. - dan
