7mm08 and 120gr light recoil

I started my grandson off with 10 grains of TB under a 100 SP... In Utero... guaranteed under 1/10th MOA... granted the range was pretty short...

The 120 BT is actually quite a stout bullet. It was beefed up at request of silhouette shooters earlier in the Ballistic tip lines development. Punches above it’s weight class and ideal for this role.

How would this slowed compared to the Hornady custom Lite 120 grain SST

I am confident that the bullet is at least as good (but I believe, better)... but as far as the factory load goes, I have no experience with it, so cannot compare.

But, the load I listed was easily MOA out to 200 yards when fired by 12 - 14 year olds.

Some pretty impressive shooting by barely teenagers... good on them and their teacher.

Provided that they are armed appropriately, I have always found that kids are surprisingly good shooters if started out with decent technique and mental coaching... better than most adult male beginners.

This fall I took a friend and his 13 year old daughter to the range to get them set up for their deer hunt... they are both brand new to rifle deer hunting... the dad was shooting 6" groups with his properly rigged .30/06 with Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9X40... his daughter was consistently shooting 1 1/2" groups with her .308 (reduced loads) with a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7X32 mounted. Just to be sure, I shot a five shot group into an inch with the dad's .30/06... the father had some mental blocks and was flinching badly... after talking him through a few groups, he got them down to 3"... while his daughter continued on her own shooting 1 - 1 1/2" groups. Since they would be hunting together with one rifle, the decision was made that the daughter would be the shooter.

For deer rifles I started my dsughter with a 243 then quckly made the switch to 7-08. Could have skipped the .243, if you can it you can shoot the 7-08.

Try the 120 NBT with around 40 grains of H4895. After that I'd give some serious thought to just staying with that bullet. Its a lot tougher than people seem to think, being 3/4s copper but is still a violently expanding bullet. On a recent red and fallow deer population control hunt my shooting partner and I took 250 apiece. He ran the 120 up to 3650 fps in a 7 WSM and shot to 700..
