Hey,

Im about to pull the trigger on my first 7-08 and plan to relaod for it. I found the bullet id like, there seems to be a good variety of powder out there, but cant find brass anywhere. Is this typical?

Thabks guys

I dont know if I want or need to spend the extra for lapua. Though its nice to know HP is there so thanks.

I also have heard the resizing can be less than ideal?? Wanted to avoid that since im just starting.

Is it common to not beable to find 7mm08 brass at stores? Anyone good places to find some (not lapua obviously)?

Thanks

i always have a hard time finding brass for it but once i do find it i buy it ... i have also turned 308 into 7mm-08 with no issuse I did 30 pieces of some range brass

It's super easy to find 7-08 brass... Buy loaded ammo and empty it then refill!

Aside from Lapua that's about the only option, haven't seen Winchester brass for a long time and the little bit of Hornady I spotted evaporated quickly.

I second Hotwheels81 on this. I bought my first 7mm-08 last fall and couldn't find brass. I bought a few boxes of factory ammo to start with and managed to keep going for a little. Since then, a buddy gave me a bag of .308 brass and I resized that. Now I am flush with brass for a while. Resizing isn't hard to do, just make sure you lube the heck out of the cases and measure correctly.
Good luck.

If You don't want lapua shoot and reload otherwise lapua or nosler is the only brass worth buying separately anyway IMO plus your going to need to break in the new gun anyway

Actually Lapua brass does not cost that much more. Given how many times a person can reload good cases, the cost difference per firing is at most a few cents. At $115 per 100 for Lapua, and $80 per 100 for say Remington, the difference is about $.35 per case. Over only ten firings, the cost difference is $.035 per firing. Over twenty firings, the cost difference per firing is only is only $.0175.

Where are you finding this ammo? There is none here in 7mm-08. Seen about 6 boxes when I picked up my rifle only bought 3 and haven't seen any ammo since.

It's on the shelf in my area, I've spotted it at crappytire and the LGS's... When you find 4-5 boxes of the same brand just grab them all and you have brass for a while.... Personally tho the Lapua option or resize .308 are both good options... A box of 20 loaded rounds start around $30 and go over $60 for "premium" crap... I'd rather work with premium new brass than pay a pile of money for mediocre ammo.

Lapua makes 7-08 brass now. It's also $115 per 100

Ya I know...

At $30-$35 per box for Hornady American WT let's break it down into easy to digest numbers

$1.15 per case (never mind the tax)
$0.40 per bullet (interlock or amax)
$0.26 powder (approx)
$0.05 primer (approx)

$1.86 per bang for the first go around vs $1.75, now take away the cost of the brass for the subsequent reloads after the initial outlay for the brass and your at $0.71 per bang... Or about $14-$15 per box... So your going to save about $20 per box x 5 boxes on your second reload of that brass...

You could toss that Lapua brass in the garbage after loading it twice and still almost break even when compared to factory ammo.

I've seen loaded rounds at cabellas and wss in stoon. I haven't seen any win, rem, or fed brass in quite a while, not since the component shortage has been going. I have seen 308 avail and always lots to pick up at the range; I'm told it's pretty easy to resize.

Depending where you are it's "currently" difficult to find much brass at all in any caliber.

I too have a 7.08 and haven't seen Winchester or Remington brass "in stock" for a good long time (for my 243 also - just tough to find).

Hornady is just starting to produce 7.08 case (available in the US - lists at 50 bucks US for 50 cases) about the same price as Nosler brass which typically sells for about twice the cost of Win brass.

I won't buy Lapua because I simply don't need that quality.

So as has been suggested, buy some factory loads, shoot em and save the brass.

I was picking up Hornady American Whitetails for just on 25 bucks a box and re-using the brass (which as noted above - the cases are worth a buck a piece if you buy them from hornady, so figure 20 bucks in the price of the loaded ammo is just for the cases).

Hornady brass is not highly regarded by some but it's good enough for my accuracy/reuse needs.
