7mm08 enough gun for moose

Moose are killed around here every year with a variety of moderate 7mms; 7X57s, 280 Remingtons , and the 7-08. The slightly smaller 6.5X55 also puts meat in the freezer. No need to worry about the 7-08, choose a rifle and scope you like, sight in, and go hunting.
 
It all depends on where you hit it. A poorly placed shot from any rifle will cause a lot of grief. It all depends on the nut behind the butt plate.
 
Moose are not hard to kill. I have shot them with a .243, 6.5 x 57, 25-06 and lastly a 7mm-08.

We have a moose hunt planned for the coming year. I am torn between taking my Ruger M77 Compact S/S laminate in 7mm-08 and a Sako Greywolf S/S laminate in 300WM. My biggest concern is that they will be opportunities for longer shots (in the 400-600yd range) and I am not sure if I would trust the 7mm-08 at those ranges (especially out of the shorter M77 16.5" barrel). If bull elk are in the area, I will almost certainly take the 300WM but man, I love to carry the M77 for a week rather than the Sako.

What kind of range would you limit yourself on a moose or elk with a 7mm-08 ?

Depending on the terrain; if it was standing broadside in the open and I had a good rest and could not get any closer I might go as far as 450 yards... I would prefer to call it in or work closer.
 
Nope, don't you know you need the latest whizzum magnum to kill moose? They're getting smarter and smarter these days, and have taken to wearing body armor.

7-08 is to the .308 as the .270 is to the 30-06. It's a very capable round for moose, as long as you do your part, and keep your shots reasonable, ie under 300M or so.
 
I had a BLR in 284 Win, out of its 20" barrel I had a 160 gr Speer SP going 2650 fps. Its about what you would get a 7mm/08 doing. I never had ANY problems taking game with it. I took a few deer out just short of 300yds. I see no problems with it to take moose.

Aye, well said. Somewhere along the line in the last 40 years or so the caliber race crossed the border into Canada. Don't fall for it. Get a rifle with modest recoil, good accuracy, good knock-down power and practice, practice, practice. From what I've heard about the 7mm-08, it meets the test. So does the 6.5x55, .270, 7x57, and probably a few more I can't think of.
 
It will do a good job. I was told recently my 25-06 was only adequate for small deer, so I put it in the safe and hunted with my 22-250 and bang flopped two within a minute of each other with a single shot rifle. Good shooting trumps caliber and the rifle every time.
