7mm08 questions...

A Vanguard S2 in 7-08, would be great quality, and the weight along with a 24" barrel would make the most of the little cartridge, and be a dream recoil wise. These are very accurate rifles, and a good $$ value. As said autos would cut the recoil a bit better, but do you really want a semi?
 
My lil TC Encore in 7-08 is about the softest shooting rifle I have ever owned with the flextech stock and a 28" barrel it takes the whoomp outta an already mild round... There was a thumbhole pro hunter NIB on the EE not long ago in .280 Rem but that may still be a bit much for you...

A friend of mine who's had her shoulder rebuilt shoots a T3 in .270 and she swears it's mild to her, I zeroed it for her last year and that thing felt like it was a 30-06... I'll stick to my 7-08.

using hogdgon's data for reduced loads using H4895, max load is 51.o grains with a 150 grain bullet, applying the reduced load starting point of 60% yields a starting load of 30.6 grains. You can work safely from 30.6 all the way back up to 51 grains until you settle on a load or velocity. And seeing that the typical starting load for this powder/bullet is 46.o grains for a velocity of 2806 FPS you can easily see that 30.6 is going to be in 30-30 territory............:cool:

Just a note..........this works for any cartridge that has load data for H4895, just multiply the maximum load by .6 or 60% and that is your starting load for reduced velocity/recoil loads
 
A 375 h&h should be just the ticket....they hardly kick at all��. sorry, someone had to say it.......seriously the new light loaded 06 shells are supposed to reduce recoil in half why not try em.
 
While a good idea in theory, IMO you also lose performance to the point where you may as well not be shooting a 30-06. Which brings us back to the point of the thread I'm trying to find a good replacement temporarily (I hope)
 
You'll like the 7-08.

I always turned my nose up till I bought one. Was searching for a bearable calibre to use as a dedicated sheep hunting rifle a few years ago - and have a original Ti in 7-08 that weighs under 6 fully loaded chambered in 7-08.

I am amazed at how reasonable this rifle is to shoot - and think it fits the bill perfectly for what you are seeking.
 
I run the 139 SST and IB's in my three 7-08's, over W760 or H4350... Potent medicine... I am after one more 7-08... but "bunny" got there ahead of me... it is only a matter of time...

I thought the point was a temporary light recoiling rifle... in which case reduced loads in your current .30/06 makes the most sense... you are not "losing" performance, you are reducing performance (and recoil) to the manageable level... intentionally.
 
you can get a savage axis in 7-08, and it will kick a bit lighter then your 30-06, or you can add a few pounds to your 30-06 and it will kick less then a 7-08.......rifle weight plays a huge factor in this game, so reduce the loads or bulk up the rifle. But to put it in real simple terms you can let the shoulder heal and carry on or you can continually damage it being stupid and pay for it for the rest of your life.....your call
 
That 7m is gonna bang you pretty bad too. Friend of my had the same issue and one shot out of a Mosin back to square one. If I was in you situation I would look at 308 1:10 twist 180g pill

Are you thinking 7mm rem mag?
As the 7-08 should recoil milder then even a .308.

I'd go with the 7-08 in a stout rifle with a cushy recoil pad.
Shoulder injuries can be rather unforgiving.

Trust me I get that... I've already concluded that I'm not hunting deer right now. To the folks who have contributed something useful, thanks, I'm gonna give it a couple months and see how things are going before making a decision.
 
If it seem logical to get a heavier 30-06.... why not just get a heavier 7mm-08?

I sold a 700 CDL in 30-06 and replaced it with a 7mm-08 700 Mountain SS. And I can tell you for sure the recoil is considerably less even considering the 2lb lighter rifle. OR what ever the weights are.
I bought it out of curiosity and I absolutly love shooting it. Pair up a heavier rifle with a7mm-08 reduced recoil round and you will be very happy

my girlfriend uses this ammo and its considerably less recoil compared to the regular ammo. not sure how its done but its the same grain of bullet just doesn't kick back as much.

....I have tried the Federal Fusion reduced recoil .308 ammo... Little to no diffrence in recoil, after playing with it in my missus's lady hunter I tried it in a Norc M305 shorty and it was 100% reliable cycling the action... In my eye's there is truly no free lunch, the only managed recoil ammo I have found so far that worked as advertised were 12ga slug's, for everything else there is H4895 or trail boss.
 
I have 308's chambered in different rifles and a 30-06. I shoot mostly 180 gr out of them. I have old vanguard chambered in 7-08, I shoot 140 federal noslers .. The vanguard is a heavier rifle and the recoil is very light. Every deer that's been shot with it pretty much died on the spot. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a moose with it either.

This is a most sensible decision on your part, having had rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders myself.
All I can say is give it time to heal without making that shoulder worse than it is now..
