Well I'm just getting into reloading - I have to say this is quite a nice forum to peruse - I've spent about the last 3 days going over many of the posts in this particular forum.

I recently picked up a 7mmO8 and am somewhat satisfied with factory loads but being a tinkerer want to get my own loads down - that and the wife finally agreed to letting me reload.

What I'm wondering - What are your favourite recipes for 7mm08 - whether it be for large game, plinking, target, or varminting. I've been toying with various Barnes loads - but would like the consensus of the CGN crowd.

H4350, W760 for powders.

Remington brass is pretty good and fairly inexpensive.

Sierra Bullets are easy to tune, game kings, matchkings, etc.

130 or 150 match kings for target.

Anything 140 for big game, 150 works also.I like Swift Sciroccos for hunting loads.

Get your 140 grain premium bullets to 2850 ft/sec or so and you have a very good accurate hunting round capably of decent distances.

Always work up your powder load since every rifle is different.

2.800" OAL length does seem to be fairly common.

This is my hunting load with the SC II's 150 gr, W760, Rem brass, 2.800", CCI 200's.Switch to SMK's and this is how they all look during load development.;)

I've had great success with Varget and 140 TSX bullets seated to and crimped at the front cannelure. I can't share my exact loads with you as they're over the 'book max,' but I get excellent accuracy, and devastating results on deer.

162 A-Max, also over Varget, make good target loads. I plan on using this load on deer sooner or later
 
I have used 120gr Nosler Btips, and 130grain Speer BTSP in my 7mm-08 so far, 139 SST's are planned for next year as well.

I found that the 120gr Nosler's were very accurate, I put my best group down with them. That group was 1/2" high by 1" wide at 100yd. It may have been a bit of a fluke, but the 3 5-shot groups I have laid down with the 120's have all been under 1.5" @ 100yd, and I am still pretty new to this, I'm still trying to improve.

I loaded them with 44.4gr Varget, 2.8" OAL, Rem brass, Win LR primers. That is pretty much max in my Remington, I get the primers starting to flatten at 44.6gr. Hodgdon book max is 45gr. Hornady lists 43.7gr max with 120gr bullets, so start low.

130gr speers have been ok, not as accurate as the btips, but only cost 28 cents each. Haven't shot anything with these bullets yet.

I did take 2 deer this year with the 120 Ballistic tips, both around 175-225yards. 1 was through the ribs, which entered nicely and blew about a 3/4" hole exiting. 2nd one was through both front shoulders, which I was not impressed about doing - but at least the shrapnel inside punched some holes in the lungs. The bullet fragmented pretty badly, but it did exit, or at least something exited. Both front shoulders were cat food.

I would not be comfortable shooting a large buck through anything but ribs with the 120gr btips. Some have said the 120gr is simply a shortened 150gr bullet, and therefore has a relatively thick jacket, making it tougher. At an estimated 3025-3050FPS at the muzzle, it is still pretty frangible out at 150-200yards in my experience. That being said, both were one-shot kills, dropping them within 20-30 yards.

Next year I'm going to try Hornady's 139gr SST with Varget and IMR4350.

wow thanks guys!! I knew that there was a large amount of knowledge here on the forums and quite a bit of enthusiasm. I'm really quite excited to get into loading and work out my recipe.

It seems from reading that the recipes are almost as varied as the "cook". I'll have to work it out - needless to say i'm quite excited about all the "taste testing".....!!

You might want to consider Reloder 17 with the 140 Accubond or Partition.
I have found it delivers stellar accuracy and very good vel;ocities as well.

I'd try RL17 in it as well, with whatever bullet you plan to use. Works well in the 260 Rem, so should in the 7mm-08 sister!
 
I use reloader 19 with either a hornady interlock 154g (2650fps)or a nosler 140g(2750fps) ballistic tip in mine. It is a remington 788 with 18.5" barrel. I have used imr 4350 also with good results, just a little slower in velocity.
