Just wondering, which caliber would be a better choice, ballistics ect. for a
rifle which would serve a dual purpose for Deer and Moose.

Thanks

There was a big thread on here not to long ago just just what you ask.

Here's my thoughts for what they're worth,

Ballistics 7mm 175s @ 2800fps = 30-06 180s @ 2800fps
Advantage none.

Some will argue the 7mm will carry a little farther & have a little more penetration but then the 06 has a thicker bullet & makes a slightly larger wounds channel to start with.
Advantage none.

Most guns in 06 will have a 1 shot larger mag capacity, that could or could not be an advantage.
Advantage slightly to the 06

To me I would choose the 06 if I had a choice between two equal guns but I wouldn't turn down either caliber if that's what popped up in a deal:)

i''d also go with the '06 you're right at the top end of the 7mm spectrum with the 175s and the rifle you get may not like them or have a fast enough twist to handle them, whereas the '06 with 180 is a pretty normal load- almost a "middle" load - you still have some wiggle room if you want to go heavier and the 1 extra capacity- plus you don't have to get into the slower powders and heavy charges if you don't want to

There are but 2 7mm cartridges I want, neither of which are the Remington Mag. That being said: If you can't decide...caribou=7mmRemMag, queen=.30-06

A lot depends of if y0ou reload or buy factory ammo.

Factory 30-06 ammo, even the so called "High-Energy" and "Light Magnum" versions are neutered - Try running some over a chrono if you want an eye-opener - due to the thousands of near 100 year old rifles chambered for the round.

Hand-loaded to realistic pressures however in a modern rifle the 30-06 can keep up with the 7mm RM in all respects.

either choice would be a good one. Even though they are both popular cartridges and ammo is easy to find for either one, the 30-06 will be a bit cheaper and more variety.

Both exellent choices. I don't have a 30-06 but I have a 7mm mag that I got a screamin deal on. Haven't shot any game with it though. Too many rifles and not enought tags:D

They also load the 7mmRem down,it seems the new more accurate pressure reading equipment shows erratic swings,so to keep the average correct, it's factory loaded down.

I would take the 7RM any day.

It can do anyhting that aq 30-06 can do and more.

HOWEVER...I doubt that you would really notice a big differece in the real world..;)

Both rounds are underloaded in facotry ammo, but the 30-06 more so.:D

Personal choice I guess. I prefer the 7mm RM. It will push a 175gr Partition over 2900 fps, or a 160gr at over 3000 fps. These bullets penetrate very well, and I have taken deer, moose and elk with good results using these two bullets. For long shots the 160gr Accubond is hard to beat; it shoots flat and carries lots of energy down range.

Magnum rifles are longer and heavier.

Ammo is more expensive for the 7mag.

30/06 ammo can be found at EVERYWHERE!

Recoil would be a bit more, but not much, with the 7mag.

Six of one half a dozen of the other

I would have to echo the sentiments of supercub....You will find 30-06 and for that matter 308 and (ugh) 303 anywhere In Canada that sells hunting licenses.....I was in Fort Liard (NWT) the other week and that was the case, mind you the prices were a weeee bit inflated !!!!
