7MMRem VS 30-06

............for what the 7mm rem mag does, it uses too much powder to do it in my opinion. The 06 offers performance way too close with less powder and like said previously, 220 grain round noses to go after anything in north america.
You can chuck 220 grain bullets at 2500 fps with a 7mm RM?? ') LoL
Nope, but you can deliver a bullet form a 7RM that wil do all the 220gr can and more...:) :D

Im partial to the .30-06. Especially in this case. The ammo is cheaper, there is lots of it, and I have seen them go through a deer and moose, in the ribs and out the other side. Penetration is not a factor here, both will do just fine, but the 06 is a more practical gun, where having a 7mm is more like a show piece... My rifle is bigger than your rifle...

Bottom line both will work.

I have used most common cals from the 303Brit, 308, '06, 30Gibbs, 6.5-06, 270 and now the 7RM. Why do I choose the 7RM NOW???!!

Ballistics...

Except for a wildcat 7mm (the 280 is a wee bit small), WSM or RSAUM, the 7RM offers me the best ballistics to as far as my Leica 800 can range. Nothing combines the low wind drift, flat trajectory and retained velocity for increased hitting power as the 7mm poly tipped bullets. Not until you get into some very big cased heavy recoiling boomers of larger cal. I dislike recoil and will not use a walkabout rifle with a muzzle brake.

The 6.5 is very very close but I do like the higher bullet weights in the 7mm and ease of factory ammo, even in that place in Sask.

My perfect factory cartridge, based on what we know today, would be the 7WSM but factory ammo is still rare and that is the clincher. I want to hunt with something that I can get ammo for just about anywhere, including Sask.

The only bullets that I will use, at least till something better comes a long, is the 162gr SST and Amax. With these two, I can hunt off the muzzle or way out there with confidence that the on game performance is great. The Accubonds are a very nice bullet but cost twice as much as the Hornady's. I prefer to shoot something I can afford to practise with and I do like to practise.

The only big negative with the 7RM is the use of light bullets at very high velocity. Short range performance can be very poor, but that is more a case of poor bullet application.

We will have to see how my 7Mystic turns out (no surprises here). Might just be another choice if I don't loose/forget my ammo on a hunt.

Try the rifles you are looking at. Buy the one that 'feels' best in your hands and 'snaps' to the shoulder. Ie, the one that 'fits' you best!!

7mm vs 30.06

I thought I was not seeing right everyone taking the 30.06 over the Rem 7mm magnum went to my sierra book and Federal loaded ammo ballistics site;

Took 165gr sierras to make a same weight comparason;
>30.06, 2800fps zerro at 200 -45.1" at 500, energy 1333fbs

7mm Rem, 2950 fps, zerro at 200 -36.5" energy at 500 1832fbs
500 lbs energy more is quite alot.

Quite a diffrence to me, and if you talk about reloading you will see more.
hands down the 7mm is better

..................thats for those particuliar recipes. I could go to my manuals now and pull out various recipes and comparisons that would show much closer performance by the 06 with less powder use.

Everyone knows a 30-06 will sling 180s @ 2800fps all day long why would you cut 165s back to 2800??
Keep checking those loading books you can find one to say what ever you want:confused:

I still say 06 & 7mag are as equal in balistics as any animal could tell:cool:

Actually, some 30-06's won't. I've loaded for a couple now that, for whatever reason, tight bore etc, won't get anywhere near 2800 fps with a 180. One of them will barely do it with a 150. FWIW - dan
