Hello,
I am in the market for a new custom build and I can't decide on a caliber. I know I want something bigger then what I have ( .280 rem) and I want a rem 700. Then I can't decide on a stock , McMillan a5, aics 2.0 folding, or an hs precision with a pistol grip style grip.
Thanks

what is your budget? another good question to ask yourself :D and make sure its a caliber YOU are going to be happy with, as a custom build is going to be quite the investment, and something you'll want to hold on to hopefully.

i would say if you have never used any of those stocks go with the A5 , cant loose , but best to go to some gun shows and check them out, some custom rifle stores may even let you handle there products.

also i would go with the edge for the cost of reloading all your choices you might as well get the bang for the buck, Alberta tactical has one for sale right now 4500 bucks,

Out of the calibers your questioning the .338 edge would be my choice as well... or a 7mm STW if I could add one to ur list haha.

As for your budget... $3500 might get your custom rifle built, but it could be cutting it very very close (depending on what parts your using, and who is putting the rig together for you), but sounds like your on the right track :D

I <3 my STW!

What do you intend to do with the rifle?

Hunt at long range? If not get a 6mmbr and be done with it.
If hunting how far would you shoot at game?
What kind of game do you plan on shooting?

It all point toward an answer.

Of those 3, 338 edge is least overbore. 7mm RUM likes barrels in a Colonel Williams, watch them sleep kinda way, don't expect a long life with that... When you look at velocities you must account for barrel length/twist/# of grooves. 2 inches of barrel can equalise the difference between many cartridges. All the cartridges you list NEED a long barrel to maximise potential. If you only go 26" or so, you might as well get a 300 win mag and ritualistically dump 10 grains of powder onto the ground each shot instead of the RUM. I am deciding on a sub 50 cal ultra long range cartridge as well. I've pretty much decided on the 338 edge for ease of build (savage acton). That being said, a 7mm STW pushing VLD 180's was quite tempting. Pick your poison with stocks, just make sure it will support your needs. My vote goes for a 338 Edge with a 30 inch barrel and a brake, but that is just what I'm about to do...

"Mostly target but some long range hunting"

7 rem mag or 300 win mag then...Shoot it more, with better barrel life. 190's launched at 2950 on a 26 inch tube for the WM. And you'll have usable barrel for longer than any of the above. Then take your shot out gun and build it bigger if you want.

I have been dwelling over the same question of caliber, and was going to build a 300 rum, but I am now down to a 300 wsm or 7 stw, if I don't find a
nice used gun for sale. Both are extremely accurate.

None of those calibers you mentioned have good barrel life but if you had to choose one based on the barrel life I would choose the 338, but be prepared for alot of recoil if what you want is mostly a target rifle. The reccomendations for the 7RM and 300 Wm are good ones in my opinion.
