7rm new load for me

Just purchased a beautiful savage 114 in 7rm. Want to work up a moose load for it. Having trouble sourcing magnum primers. Am I ok to just use the cci Large rifle primers I have a Brick of? Plan on using 4831sc for powder and from what I’m reading there will only me 5-7 more grain of powder in this cartridge.

Any insight apporeciated. And if anyone has a pet load that I might want to try let me know.
 
7 Rem Mag ...Win or Fed brass/ Fed mag primer/61gr IMR 4350 /160gr Accu Bond will do 40" of moose penetration wise and cut .439" 3 shot groups at 2920fps 100 yards.
 
Years ago I loaded 7Rem for 3 friends. They all got the same load, 61 grains of IMR 4350 and the 154 grain Hornady Interlock. It shot well enough in all three rifles but variations in barrels being what they are, only did 2850 fps on one of the slower barrels. Although thats the sort of thing that would make me cry myself to sleep and 30-06 users to smirk it didn’t bother the users at all.

My only current 7 Rem likes old style 7828 and 150 NBTs and 160 ABs.
 
I’ve used LRP in 6.5 PRC and 7 mm PRC and found the standard primers were more accurate.

Was using 4831 sc powder and Hornady ELD-X bullets

I work with a guy that loves to tell all about his exalted 7mm Magnum like it's the next best thing to a bolt of lightning. He has only ever used factory ammo and I doubt he even know what a chrony is. I don't have the heart to tell him that a 30-06 is pretty much the same.

Same rifle shoots 160gr Accubonds over RL26 @ 3035 fps
 
Tried CCI 200 large rifle & CCI 250 magnum primers in 7mm Rem Mag head to head with 5 diff powders and temps ranging from -15c to +29c. Standard deviation was identical with both primers. Magnum primers gave 15 fps more velocity
 
Yeah I don't see a problem using large rifle primers with a 7mm Rem Mag. I've gotten about the same difference as above, 24 fps average difference on a ladder test with 160gr Speer bullets and IMR4831.

Best results come from seating 0.020" off the lands and working up slowly until pressure signs. The 3.290" COAL in the books tends to handicap the cartridge with the longer bullets. Here's a handload and a factory load, both 160gr flat base bullets. One of these is moving *a lot* faster than the other:

Some older factory loads are barely .270 Winchester power. Handloading really gets the most out of the 7-mag for sure.
