I don't think either is wrong - the gun could have been used either with pellets on waterfowl or with heavy shot or solid projectiles for dangerous game. A rear sight would support the latter as primary purpose over the other I would think but others would know better than I.
Regarding the name of the cup I don't anyone but BB thinks his Canvasback proposal is best but it brings up a related topic: what is the most appropriate name for the gathering? Since not sponsored or even to my knowledge officially sanctioned by Gun nutz it seems the informal title used so far, The CGN Doublegun Classic, might be reconsidered.

The current front runner for the name of the event is the Upper Canada Double Gun Classic. We would like to move away from using a brand owned by someone else (CGN).

As far as the trophy’s name, we could name it after the inaugural winner? Laugh2


I also proposed the Patrick C. Memorial Gun of the Year but Patrick objected on the grounds that he’s still alive. I told him that’s an easily corrected detail. Laugh2

In all seriousness I think the first order of business for the newly formed organizing committee, once our chairman Alvaro calls the first meeting, will to be to decide on the permanent names for both the event and the trophy.

It was great day with great people, it was fun getting 3 big bore guns out, on the Greener i believe this gun was made for both purposes to shot water fowl and other birds and heavy game as it was retailed by W.G. Rawbone in Capetown Africa. I believe in the late 1800's there were a lot if birds shot for there feathers to be put into hats of the wealthy, so it may have been used for that also in Africa.
When i got the gun there was a letter from Greener and i made notes from this. ( I have put the letter some place for safe keeping but have not found the safe place again) Greener has no record of when the gun sold just that it was started in Oct 1882.
From the information i have it is a Model 3 and is a upper end of the middle grade guns. One of the statements in the letter is that it is a very very rare gun which would indicate that Greener didn't make a lot of them

I have not shot either of the 4 bore i had at the show but have fired a double 4 bore rifle which was a experience. The 8 bore rifle i had at the show is tame compared to the 4

While I’m not in a position to pick a date at the moment, I can make an early suggestion for a meeting location……the sporting clays course at the Oshawa Gun Club.

But before a date can be picked, some people need to get in for their annual service. Various repairs have been spoken about at this years classic. I heard everything from backs to legs and even eyes.

Disappointed I couldn't make it! Don't have a double gun yet... but working on the design (and build) of a .470NE side by side. Will certainly attempt to make it out to next years meet up!
 
Regarding that 4 bore, I can’t help but think it would be fun to make a couple gauge adapters for 12ga shells and shoot the odd round of skeet with it. Sure to turn some heads.
 
Bill, we need to have you and Ashcroft join us one year. You two need to start planning for next year. We know you have a place to stay and a host to get you to the event. ;)


BTW I have edited the title of this thread to reflect the permanent name of the event. The Upper Canada Double Gun Classic.
 
Bill & I briefly discussed going this year but that was as far as it got. There are a lot of logistics to be resolved at home and away to make this happen, not the least being the method of transportation. It’s easy to fly but neither of us could attend this marvellous event without bringing a couple of toys for show & tell or sale which makes a road trip more practical - almost. In my case that’s about a four day drive each way, not much less for Bill. We’re both past 80 now, both married as well and our wives also get a vote. But if we’re gonna do it next year is the best year. Maybe…….

Jim, I'm well aware of the length of the drive, having covered every inch of it more times than I remember. i just try never to do it all in one go! Laugh2.

And I completely understand about wanting to bring some of your treasures along. We would want you to.

But many of us drop our guns in the mail to send them to buyers or gunsmiths and we take delivery of them by the same method. If either you or Bill could be comfortable mailing some guns here before hand, I'd be happy to be temporary custodian while they are in Ontario. And make sure they were promptly and carefully repacked (I'm a bit fanatical on that subject) and on their way back to you both after the event. I think flying is the only reasonable way to get this far away from your homes and I'm positive your wives would agree with me.

You might even take the award for “travelled the furthest”. Chris Dawe has won it the last two years. No contest last year but this year we had someone who flew up from Houston. Chris only beat him by about 200 km. Google maps is our arbiter. Flight paths don’t count. Laugh2
 
Would rail be an option? Via rail was willing to allow me to travel to northern Ontario with a firearm. Their rules were unloaded and in a case and follow any other federal or provincial law. I have no idea about going cross country but it would take the driving component out of the question.
 
Thanks to Canvasback and members of the Upper Canada Double Gun Classic for remembering the AB and BC members, principally Ashcroft and myself. Its important that our physical presence isn't as big an issue as being a part of this wonderful group. Regular contributions on this web site as in important part of bringing double gun collectors together to share our passion for double guns.
