Just acquired one of these fine old rifles.
My Hornady and Lee reloading manuals only
give load data for modern rifles.Info on the
reloadersnest site also proved to be the same.

Anyone want to share their 1895 recipes?

This is the load I've been useing for years. W760 or H414, your choice same load.

140 grn bullet, your choice
larger rifle primer
49.0 grains of powder (W760 or H414)
pressure, cup, 39,700cup
velocity, 2720 fps from a 29in barrel on a 95 mauser.

This is the max load listed in the 49th Lyman reloading handbook. It is very accurate in all of my 7x57 rifles. 95s or 98s. It takes deer cleanly at any reasonable range out to 350 yds.

The thing about these old mausers, is that they have very long throats and were built for 175 grain bullets. They do very well with 140 grains but they need to be seated out as far as the magazine will allow. If your throat is worn and many are, use 175 grain bullets

44.5 grains of W760 or H414, your choice
175 grain bullet, your choice
I use magmum primers the book says Large Rifle
2475 fps
46,000 cup
This is listed as a max load as well.

For both loads above, start at least 3 grains of powder lower. Your rifle may not like them. After all the rifle is probably close to 100 years old. You don't know its history and what weaknesses are present. Be cautious and be safe. If your have a badly pitted bore, pressures can spike to unsafe levels.

I think you'll find that the published loads your describing are suited to the '95. As usual start low and work up. FWIW - I tend to stay close to minimum loads for all milsurp based sporters.
The 95's are good actions, made by reputable manufacturers. If they have a weakness, its the lack of gas venting capability in the bolt.

Thanks guys. I think I will have to keep my loads more to the minimum side as this rifle is 100 plus years old.
To be more specific, this rifle is a "Mauser Chileno Modelo 1895-Manufactura Loewe Berlin":D

So far she is shooting quite well using 173 gr Privi ammunition. Haven't tried any handloads yet.
