7x57, 270 or 280 for moose?

I have a 7X64 (identical to a 280 Rem) would be my first choice with a 160 or 175 grain bullet. Agree with JHC-II the 7X57 works very well with the same combo in a modern action - old Brno fan myself. Pick either one - no regrets.

If you have so many boxes of ammo or bullets ,find load that works best for you and you feel most confident with and enjoy the hunting. Some say bigger the better but i personaly like little disadvantage to hunt with smaller cal.s.
Only thing that separate my confidence from small vs. bigger cals is good bullet selection.
I personally like hard bullet like barnes or swift a frame, triple x and such.
One of the best results on paper i had with .308 Grand Slam 165 gr. but after one bad experience with Federal Soft point 180 gr in 300WSM i decided i am never using anything other than above mentioned and similar hard construction bullets.
I dont say GS speer is bad bullet but i like something more durable for game with tough hide and bone...only MPO

Anyone of the above will work very well.
I have rifles in those calibers but do most of my hunting the last 10/15 years with my Remington Model 700 in 280 Rem. using hand loaded 139 gr. Hornadys BTSP traveling just over the magic speed of 3000'/s.
Have shot moose(10) from 80 yards to 300 yds. and about 25 deer from 16 to over 400 yards with this combo under a Leupold 4 x 12 scope.
Of course if I have my druthers I wait for a broadside shot....or high in the neck column just under the ear .(Brain or spinal cord shots don't bleed out well but they usually drop where they stand)

There is no bad choice between them. They will all work just fine. If it was up to me though it would always be the 7x57. I have used it on many moose and I didn't have to go looking for any of them.

Out of your choices, itd be hard bot to put an aussie 270 infront of moosey . Mainly just for another hunting report about the joyous .270win haha

Of the three?

Yes.

I have shot moose with all three, just done expect a 130 grain .277 to push through both shoulders at 250 yards.

A 243 will do the job if you work within both your rifles limitations, and your own!

Wouldn't 130gr in a .270 be considered a little light for caliber? Or not?

Light for caliber in my opinion. Wouldn't be my first choice for moose but at this point in the season it would be hard to justify trying to change it up. Just be picky as hell about the shot and pick your battlefield to your advantage.

Theoretically speaking if you were hunting moose and you had a choice between a 7x57 shooting 139 grain Hornady Interlocks, a 270 shooting 130 grain Grand Slams or a 280 shooting 165 grain Remington Core-Lokt bullets which would you go with?

The reason I ask about the 130 grain bullets is because I have about 10 boxes of those 270 cartridges and I intend to use them in my new 270.

I only read the first response, and I agree with HoytCannon.

Id go behind the front shoulder

It really doesn't matter.

Agreed. My best bull fell to a 7x57. My hunting partner's dad used a .270 and shot piles of moose with factory cup and core 130's and his brother used a .280 with factory 150gr cup and core bullets.
