7x57 and moose

I think that the 7X57 would be a great moose gun, with any heavy bullet, I'm thinking 175gr. Hornady. You want penetration with good expansion!!

In my neck of the woods, standard Winchester "Power Points"
and Remington "Core Lokts" account for a sh#%-load of moose every year,
as does the same in 6.5x55's. The vast majority are not handloaders.

I got a bull moose draw this year, and Ill be taking my BRNO 22H 7x57 stoked with good old Hornady 175 grain round nose. These are the only bullets that will grace my little carbines barrel.

Great caliber, good choice. Still think the only reason you don't see a zillion of them around is because with the lone exception of the 7mm Rem Mag, shooters on this side of the big pond seem to have some kind of abject mistrust or phobia or something when it comes to a caliber with a "mm" in it's handle. Witness the KO'ing of the 6mm by the .243, the completely unaccepted 8mm Rem Mag which is one helluva cartridge, the rarely used 9.x X whatever which are capable of bowling over Kodiak bears. Instead we have to go and build and madly market a zillion "SM, SSM, SAUM...ad nauseum, based on hundred year old cartridge designs. Gun owners.....man.....(and proud to be one!)

Been drawn for cow moose this year and my go to round in my favorite rifle is with a 140 grain barnes TSX. Is this enough to take down a cow moose at Camp Wainright? thanks boys. FS
There are moose around wainwright alberta? Isnt that a tad south. The bullet is a tad light.

Sure is. :) A sub compact car just hit one here on hwy 14 a couple of weeks ago, and I am forever seeing them when ever I venture into the training area of the base. They are not maggoty like the mule deer, but they are around.

7x57 with a 140 grain TSX worked fine for me on elk last September (http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=183231) as well as completely penetrating kudu at 300+ yards (http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=174930 )

As far as moose are concerned, I've killed a few moose over the years with the 7x57 using 140 grain Nosler Partitions as well as 139 grain Hornady Spire Point's so, yes, by all means load it up with TSX's and be prepared for great penetration and lethality on your moose.:)

I have shot a number of moose with the 7x57 and either 140, 150 or 160 Partitions. I believe the number is 8 or 9 moose with this mild mannered but effective chambering. I cannot remember shooting twice at any moose, and ranges were from 45 yards right up to 325 yards. I have never shot a 175 grain bullet from a 7x57, since I always had such great results with the lighter bullets, but some older mausers prefer that long bullet to all others. Just shoot your moose in the correct spot with that 140 TSX, and the work will start! Have a great hunt!! Regards, Eagleye

In response to that when I was trucking grain into southern alberta there was evedence of Moose in the area of Alsask. Such as 1 killed by a car pretty much on the sask alta border. I also seen a young bull Moose running along the highway between Moosejaw and Gull Lake some where I can't remember exactly. But there are alot more Moose in the southern parts of these two Provinces than most people know.

Theres plenty of moose in south western Manitoba!
Watch out, moose coming you're way.
Oh Ya, almost forgot. 7 mm in any cartridge works well on a moose. They arent hard to bring down, provided they are hit in the right spot.:canadaFlag:
