7x57 for moose

Yes, kombi, I have learned through experience, and as well as from an american gunsite, who knows alot about Husquarna's that these fine older Husquarna Model 4100 do have a slow rifling twist and thus, unfortunately do not like shooting heavy, 175 grain slugs, accuarately.

Snowhunter and others,

I have two of the 4100s in 7X57. They both have the factory 1:12 twist barrels.

They shoot fine, around an inch and a half with factory 175 gr ammo as it is all round nose and the bullets are relatively short for the weight. Even better with handloads, as long as the bullet is a round nose, not a spitzer. :)

The problem comes when we try shooting long bullets, such as 175 spitzers or the 160 gr Accubond. The Accubond is a full quarter inch longer than the 175 gr round nose and just will not shoot worth a hoot in a 12 twist barrel.

I doubt that they would shoot in a 7 mag with a 1:12 barrel!

Shooting the same bullet in my 1:9 inch 7mm-08 rifle, they will go into about an inch with almost any load I use.

Thanks for the advice Ted. I have been wondering why my, otherwise very accurate 7x57 Huskie refused to shoot 175 grain bullets accurately. I will locate some shorter, 175 grain, 7mm, round bullet for handloading. Any suggestions ?

Also, I have been wondering if accuaracy in my 7x57 Husquarna would improve with any 175 grain, 7mm with handloading ? However, since the use of the 175 grain bullet in the 7x57 huskie, model 4100, are going to be within moderate timber ranges, a round nosed bullet would, therefore be ideal.

If you can find Lapua 175's (factory ammo) you may want to give them a try. I've used them in a Ruger Number 1 International and they are both accurate as well as quite fast (for the weight). The ones I have are a round nose bullet

My dad shoots a 7x57 and althought he never shot a moose with it he has shot a few Elk. In my opinion an Elk is much harder to put down than a moose. His last one was taken this year with 160 gr nosler partitions at about 250 yards. He went about 30 yards and flopped. Punched throught the offside shoulder and exited, made a hell of a mess of that shoulder too.

My dad, a cousin, and I all use out 7mm-08's on moose with no complaints. It has about the same ballistics as the 7x57 so I dont see what you should have any trouble, as long as you can hit what you're aiming at.

7x57

I have not gotten anything with my Brno 7x57 yet.:( I have some 140 Nosler Partition's that shoot really well and will be tried out on some deer soon. :) I may be going to the Charlotte's this coming year so it will be along for the trip.
