7x57 loads?

A buddy gave me a sweet little HVA 7x57 Lightweight last year. It has a 22-inch barrel.

He's got reloading equipment and we've loaded for my 270 and 300 WM at his place so now I want to roll up some 7x57 loads.

He says the gun shoots 139 grain Hornady SST bullets very well with 48.5 grains of H4350.

I bought some H4350 powder and some 140 grain Nosler Partitions to try out.

Do you think I should go for the same charge of powder he recommends? I'd rather shoot Partitions than the SST.

What is your pet load for a 140 grain bullet?
 
Can't give you a pet load for the 7x57, but my limited experience with different bullets of the same weight is that the node is usually close to the same spot. I would try his load and +/- 0.5gr as well to see if it likes the partitions at the same level. If that doesn't work out, then you are back to working up a load from scratch.

Also recommended would be to start with several rounds at lighter charge weights, working up to the 48.5gr charge just to be sure pressures don't spike earlier than expected with the new bullet.

Let me also add that you suck and I am bitterly jealous of your HVA rifle.:D I have been on the lookout for a shorter barreled bolt action in 7x57 for a while now and have found nothing even remotely close to as nice as yours.

I know that he tried 47 grains of H4350 with 140 gr. NP bullets before and was much happier with the previously mentioned load.

But, that said, the bullet brand and weight (one grain) and charge are different.

Well Mark, I'm just lucky..

Some years ago buddy showed me this rifle out of his cabinet and I my tongue was just about hanging out just asking him to bring to the range so I could try it. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that one day he'd decide he had too many rifles and bring it over.
