I've got a Spanish Mauser cavalry carbine with a barrel that just won't shoot groups. It shoots patterns, even after trying numerous handloads and checking the bedding and the crown.

Where could I get a barrel to replace my current one?

The gun is currently legal with a less than 18-inch barrel so I expect that it is legal to install another barrel of the same length. I'd probaly have to buy a full length barrel and have it cut. but where do I get one?

No I haven't slugged it. That's beyond my ability and equipment. (I don't have any).

What would I find out and how would it improve my shooting?

I do have a pal who's a retired gunsmith who still likes tinkering.

It would tell you if the bore is oversized and to what extent. This may aid you in finding a projectile to fit the bore diameter, therefore possibly bringing accuracy back to an acceptable level, yet keeping the gun original.....

Thank you, but realistically what bullet is available that would be just a bit bigger than .284 inches?

What if my bore was .286 or .288 for example?

Boy, that would be easier than buying and paying someone to switch barrels.

This is the sweetest little carbine. Someone Bubbaed it to an extent, losing the top wood, sanding and varnishing the stock and D&Tapping the receiver for a scope.

I put an old Redfield receiver sight on it and would love to have it as a back-up, truck gun and hiking/fishing security rifle. It just won't shoot.

Have you tried 175 gr round nose bullets. I have found that some military rifles meant for rn bts will not shoot spitzers well.
