I finally got to chronie some 7x57 reloads today out of my Brno ZKK-600
First load,
154 grain Hornady
53 grain H450
2699 fps first shot
2678 second shot
next up is the
139 grain Hornady
45 grains IMR 4895
2794 fps first shot
2765 fps second shot
And finishing last is the factory Remington 175 grain at 2265 fps:(

Hi 303,
What kind of Primer and case are you using?
What's the barrel length of your Zkk-600?

If I remember right, that factory Remmy load isn't far off what they used "back in the day". I guess they need to load it with the weakest guns in mind that may get used.
Aside from a different bullet, 'ol Mr.Bell may have used somthing like that for his Pakyderms. Quite sobering to think he was almost using a 30-30 velocity for something like that!

2265 fps dont sound flashy but that big long 7mm bullet will penetrate! (at least if it is properly construced).

A 175 gr Partiton @ 2300 fps would be one good consisitent killer of big game

I use WC852, which is very similar (if not identical to) H450. 49 grains behind a 175-grain Hornady RN has worked well for me, giving 2,400 and change out of my stubby 18.5 inch barrel in my Mauser. This is a load that equals the performance of the classic 7x57 hunting load, and it does so out of a stubby barrel.

I'd recommend that you try heavy bullets in your 7x57, at least for the sake of curiosity. Most 7x57 chambers are throated for heavier bullets, especially European rifles, and often the heavy 175s give the best accuracy with this cartridge.

Keep us informed of your results.

i'll have to dig up the numbers, but the BELL 175 grainers are almost 250fps faster than the federal, i've never tried the remington.

a 175 grain bullet at 22-2300 fps is no handicap at the range that most game is shot at. i know that it does deer no good.

thanks for the info. it is good to know that some people are still using the old timers.

I have owned and shot 7x57's for most of my shooting years [close to 50 of them]. Originally, I shot factory loads out of an old mauser, and IIRC, they were all 175 grain loads. As has been observed, they did the deer no good, and the one elk that happened to receive one also died quickly. The last 20+ years, I have shot commercial rifles chambered for this fine old cartridge. Once I started reloading, I droppped the 175 grainer off the list, and since then, I have used mostly 139-150 grain bullets, except when in Elk country, and then the 160 gets the nod. I have found that the following velocities are realistic in a 24" barrelled commercial 7x57: 139/140 grain, 2900-3000; 150/154 grain, 2750-2850; 160 grain, 2600-2700. My Remington Mountain rifle so chambered [22" tube] will do 2900 with the 140 Partition, and that load kills very well. If you have an original rifle with the faster twist, it may well favor the long 175 grain projectile. Regards, Eagleye.

303carbine; Remember, these loads are in a commercial rifle,[700 Remington/77R Ruger] so use them with caution, working up carefully. With the 140 Partition, I use 55 grains of Norma MRP in a Winchester case [Winchester only!!!, Remington cases are heavier, as are Norma, reducing their capacity] fired by a WLR primer. RL22 should give similar results, but I have not personally verified this, as I have a decent supply of MRP on hand. Another Powder that is quite good in this case is IMR 4831, at 52.5 grains. These are compressed loads, but this is not a problem with either of these powders. Please start 3 grains below and work up slowly, unless you are using an older mauser, then start 5 grains down. Enjoy! Eagleye.

John; 2910 fps in my Remington Mountain Rifle with the light 22" barrel. Really good part is it shoots 3 of them into 5/8ths of an inch at 100 meters if I do my part. The 7x57 was the first centerfire rifle I fired as a youth, and I have always had a soft spot for it. With this chambering I have shot several moose, 2 or 3 elk, and a whole raft of deer and black bear. My older son took his first 4x4 muley with it, and my oldest daughter, her first moose. I feel it is in the same class as the 308 for killing power, and shots taken inside 350 yards mean meat in the pot!! It is also relatively mild on the back end, so it makes a great first hunter for a youth. Regards, Eagleye.

7x57 loads

Thanks EE, I tried the 160 Speer's with 49 grains of IMR 4831 and it was accurate and no pressure sign at all so I upped the load to 50 and I will probably leave it at that grain. They shot into an inch and will be used for blackies this spring and deer this fall.:)

Sounds like a dandy load to me. The blackies are going to be in tough shape. That 160 Speer is a super bullet in the 7mm's. Let us know how it pans out, Regards, Eagleye.
