Does anyone know if it legal to use a 7x57 for small game in Ontario (south of Hwy 7?)
I am going to call the MNR, however it is my understanding that a 7x57 is a .275 caliber and anything .275 caliber and smaller can be used.

Thanks for all your comments

d.

I thought it was anything under 270 cal could be used unless restriced to shotgun. always best to check with the MNR even though if you ask several officers they will all give you a differant answer. Remember to get name time and date of conversation. cover thy rear.

It is 270 caliber and under. You can use a 270 Weatherby or 270 WSM but not your 7 X 57. Yes, that does not make any sense. There is a couple threads elsewhere on this subject.

I believe that 7 MM is a .284 measurement and therefore over the .275 limit
Of course .270 measures .277 which should also be over but who knows
I think the extra .007 of an inch makes it MUCH scarier and more dangerous

Here is the wording of the regulation.
You may not use a rifle of greater calibre than .275, except a
flintlock or percussion cap muzzle-loading gun, for hunting
small game in the counties of: Brant, Elgin, Essex, Huron,
Lambton, Middlesex, Northumberland, Oxford, Perth and
Wellington and the regional municipalities of
Chatham/Kent, Durham, Haldimand-Norfolk, Halton,
Hamilton-Wentworth, Niagara, Peel, Waterloo and York
and the City of Toronto.
The caliber is measure by the bore size of the rifle and while the .270 is actually .277 if you measure the bullet, the bore, if measured land to land, is under .275.

Not sure of the bore. But a straight conversion of 7mm is .27559"

**edit**

I googled 7x57 and I only got results for a 7x57 Mauser(no info on it) or 7.92 x 57 (aka 8mm Mauser) are they one in the same or are they different cartridges?

They are different

I've read about this a number of times, and I was just wondering if this has ever been challenged, petitioned or something to get this obviously absurd reg changed?

Man I'm glad I live in Alberta

Not all areas south of Highway#7 are caliber restricted... only the few townships previously listed and these are all around major population areas.
.270 cal is definitely legal and 7X57 is definitely illegal in these restricted areas. Peterborough County and many other townships south of #7 have no restrictions for rifles on small game.

Years ago while in the employ of the government of Ontario I asked this question of some sympathetic MNR types. Their view was that changing the regulation would result in one that was more complicated and possibly more restrictive given the nature of the people in the upper reaches of the Ministry. Best to leave well enough alone was their opinion.

I've always wondered what the reaction of a CO would be if he found someone hunting with a rifle and ammunition marked ".275 Rigby" which is the English designation for the 7x57 Mauser. The owner might have grounds to justify that he was within the regulations.

You can use 7mm(284 dia) in peterborough county which is South of hwy 7!!! to county rd.42 to Havelock SH_T! I' given away a secret!! Only us locals know JITC

PSSSST, I'm south of hwy 7, and I use a .300 Win Mag

What bout inserts?
While not as acurate as the real thing..... the 22LR launched from a .30 caliber bore can certainly kill a grouse/gopher.....

Anybodyknows how does the caliber applies to bullet vs barrel ?

EL, I asked this question a few years ago, and its bore dia... 30 cal sabots are still 30 cal... Even though they shoot a 22 cal bullet...

It sucks, but they're inaccurate anyway... :D

The question more pressing is, can we shoot black bears with calibers larger than .275. The regs specifically say "small game", bears are definetly not small game. Redd care to jump on this one?

We're absolutely allowed to shoot big game with larger calibre.
Deer, bears..... But they have engulfed these into WMUs that either do not have a season or they have a ML- SG or even A only.

Thanks Darryl.
I need upgrades for my 6.5x55......
