I'm on the lookout for a relatively inexpensive milsurp - mostly interested in shootability, carbine length and reasonable accuracy (<2.5 moa). A sporter doesn't bother me either.

I currently have a 7mag and so I have quite a good selection of 7mm fodder so I was thinking a 7x57 mauser to keep things simple. I know the spanish 93/95 was chambered in 7x57 but was there a carbine produced? What other countries used 7mm and what would you recommend?

Check out the Brazilian Mauser Obendorf 1935 model and the 1908 models. The craftmanship is amazing on these rifles. I think there was also a short model made, but do not recall the particulars. A 1908 in decent shape is around the 300-350 mark, a 1935 in decent shape should be 400 ish and a 1935 in unfired condition is about 750-900 dollars, depending if it comes with test target and bayonet.

Look into the cost of ammo first. There is no milsurp. Remington factory runs around $35.95 for 140 grain SP's. Hornady dies run $49.95.
