We were up at our cabin for five days and on the last day my German Shorthair went nuts barking and such. We investigated but saw nothing.
The neihbours said they saw a few bears around but we hadn't up until the last day. Hanna settled down but about half an hour latter she went nuts again and I grabbed the short fat bastard went to the front door and there was this big Bruin not more than 30yds from the house.

Wife said don't shoot it just scare it, well the dog was having a #### hemorage and I let a 3" 00 Buck go into the air and wow this bear hit the after burner he spun so fast he ran into a tree bounced off and was gone in a flash. Hanna was on him now and she chased him till I called her back.
My ears are still ringing from that short muzzel.
I sure do like the shortness of this arm as it stores and carries easily.
Justified the purchase to the wife and told her of my upcoming one with the 8.5" Mag fed. lol !!!!

You fired buckshot off in the air? I hope it was in a safe direction of some sort. Not to be a safety nazi but 00 buck can fly 750-800m at the right angle. Black bears are good for booking s**t immediately after a gunshot. Grizz and Brown bears sometimes take a little more convincing

In Saanich it can bounce off a rock thru an open door a dent a cabinet.

Seriously OP how loud was it and how long to recover your hearing?

In the Bruce there's a black bear roughly every 10-12 sq km, thankfully predatory blacks are rare unlike grizzly's out west, but when we hike there I carry bear spray JIC.

My wife suggested bear bells too, but I hate 'em, if rounding a trail bend from downwind I'll just talk loud maybe.

But back to grizzlies... the old joke is: how do you tell a grizzly from a black bear?

The black bear's droppings have squirrel fur and berries mixed in -- the grizzlies have small bells and hot pepper.

The shot was in an area where there was no hazard to structures or other living souls as we are off grid and fairly isolated. This was all taken into consideration before I let it go.
The dogs barking didn't seem to bother it and it was getting closer to the cabin. My neighbour's place ( a bit of a walk from us) was broken into by a sow with cubs and a mirror was broken so he figured it didn't like the bear it saw lol !!! made a mess of the place. We take our garbage out with us when we come down so as not to attract the critters but they are very inquisitive and with the size this one had on him it would not be to hard for him to damage our place simply by rumaging around.

Well, I do not want to be mean or anything....but how do you know there is not other people your surrounding forest just walking around?
You could have injured other animals as well.
There are reasons why they tell people not to shot into the air...whatever goes up will have to come down..
Should have just let the bear be and if he gets closer and you do fear for your safety...then shot to stop the bear. You should not shot to scare....thats what bear bangers are for.

Although I understand your position, google the tests they have done on the probability of a stray bullet shot in the air coming in contact with another human much less an animal. on top of the fact buck shot wouldn't have enough velocity once it begins it decent downwards to do any damage.

Personally I would have let the bear be. You where on his turf

Well anyone who was in our area would have to have been trespassing as we have a gate with signs stating private property not trespassing no hunting as I said it is private land on the 10 acres and in the gated area we are the only ones, the neighbours had all left as the long weekend was over. I know this because we check on their property for them. No I would not shoot into the ground as I would have put a bounce shot into my out buildings the safest place was up at that point, besides this is about the performance of the Grizzley not a topic on safe direction safety on firearm drill. A warning shot is deliberately aimed shot in a safe direction and with nobody on our private land with no other buildings in the vicinity that was the place where it was discharged. No One Around got it !!! Off grid.
He the bear was working his way to our cabin 30 yds from the front door and the dog didn't bother him at all. This was supposed to be about the performance of my new 8.5" Grizzley but some guy decided to turn this in to a safe direction issue and we are not at the range -read above no one was in anyway in front of that muzzel and no structures we at risk. Cheezezuz!!!

Your property, your safety, your call. The bear learning to get the hell out of dodge, priceless!

As for the shotgun, I like my 12.5 inch barreled Dominion Arms Grizzly! But... I could see myself picking up a 8.5 MAG FED!!! He he he

Cheers
Jay

Yes I will be looking at the Mag. Fed as well. I am thinking of some ghost ring sights for my 8 1/2" for my next enhancement. I have the four round Mesa but will be replacing it with a 6rnd holder soon. And thanks Jay it was my call all the way, my ears did suffer and the 3''-- well I think the 23/4" will be the workhorse the 3" is just too punishing from that lil bast-rd lol !!!

I always thought this sign made a lot of sense

Lol !!!! Yeah just what a guy wants is bells tied to his shoes, naw not this guy or even on clothing. Pepper spray does'nt work on some humans that I have sprayed in the course of my work so I sure aint gonna rely on it with some wild critter, and our spray is stronger. Nope the little noise maker does the job as I stated on page one of this rag lol !!

Wow...you sound exactly like a true granola crunching Vancouverite :D Come on up to the northern mountains during a failed berry crop year or camp along a remote coastal stream with a failed salmon run. Don't forget the tinker bells & pepper spray as bears enjoy music and seasoning with their meals too ;)

Absolutely, this is true. Studies have also shown that fisherman and boaters are placed at extreme risk of head trauma caused by ducks and geese falling out of the sky after being shot and killed by the unsafe practice of firing a shotgun into the air. Additionally, it has been speculated (probably in Toronto or Vancouver) that shooting upwards will cause the shot pellets to leave the atmosphere (i.e. shoot into outer space!) and damage satellites or even provoke hostile reaction from passing UFO's.

Do do it! It's just not worth the risk!

Lol !!! You guys are so F-ck-d up !!!!Lol!!!! lets end this topic I promise not to write or instigate about scaring off the bears on my isolated property again, I will keep it to myself and not share with the kids!! lol !!! Wear your safty lids lads lol !!!The sky is falling in, the sky is falling in lol !!!!!

I agree. As for the shotgun, I'm looking at buying the mag fed but in 12.5.

They don't always run from a gunshot. About 25 years ago, I was surveying in the Rainbow Lake AB area. I had a wilderness carry permit, and was wearing my S&W 629. A two year old black bear got a little too friendly, and I didn't really want to shoot it, because there was a forest ranger on his way to look at a lease. I fired a shot from about 15 yards, about 6" from the end of his nose. He ran about 50 feet, then came right back. I fired another shot, about 3" from his nose, with the same result. The third was going into his head, but he seemed to be distracted, and wandered away. After that experience, I really don't have any faith in "bear bangers".

Firing into the air is dangerous? Really? Do you have any concept of the number of high calibre, high velocity rounds are fired, randomly, into the air, into the trees, every hunting season? It's a miracle there's anyone left alive.
