just picked up a nice old 1800's fowling piece. barrel is 8 bore and 60 inches long.has tower on rear of lock,so I guess it's british. weighs about 20 pounds, no dogging with this unit. pretty nice condition, just a small piece of wood missing beside top of lock.my bud says to sell it for eight hundred but I think its a keeper. have to put some big screws in the wall to hold this thing.pics at bjsgear@yahoo.com

Oh Come on Now !

You just can not tell us you acquired an ole Market Gun and no pictures to show of said bit of history....

I double dog dare you to post a few pics...when you get the time of course.

It's not screws for wall that you need it's some big fat wads and a couple handfuls of powder and shot!
Presuming that it's still structurally sound of course...

There's no way I could resist giving her a test drive if I were lucky enough to have my hands on something like that. Even if it might be a little unwieldy.

No kidding!, 8 bore shotgun? Sign me up please.

IIRC, British shotgunning sources say that their typical 8 bore was often the recipient of 3 full ounces of lead shot.

With just about .80 caliber of bore, that's one really stiff load of 0000 (.380) buckshot. In the correct alloy and Magnum 10 gauge, 0000 will go through both sides of a typical 1980s automobile. (close range)

In the slightly heavier 8 bore, one can expect to surpass this 10 gauge load, with another full ounce of payload.

Edit: Texas story of a lawman who used an 8 gauge to defend himself against four armed outlaws in the late 1800s.
Story says the one payload killed the closest outlaw outright and the same shot load mortally wounded another right behind the first, both on horses. The lawman was afoot near the front of his cabin.

hard cast 0000 is some fun stuff i load 12ga with 6 pellets of it i can only begin to think of what it would do out of a 8 bore i sure would not want to be the poor deer in its path
