I am in the market for a new big game rifle and the 8mm remington mag caught my eye. Anyone have any experience with this cal? I reload so i wont be buying ammo. Another thing is who makes a rifle chambered in that cal?

And gunsmiths with a chambering reamer... Any 700 standard magnum rifle is easily re-barreled to that caliber.

8 MM mag is one of my favorites, right up there with the .222, .220 Swift, .257R and the .35 Rem, have owned several, all Rem 700's mostly BDL's and one rare 700A, it came from the factory in a Brown Precision stock. It never achieved any great amount of popularity, the metric designation was a crippler as were the thin jacketed factory bullets of the time (late 70's early 80's) and a 24" barrel. I had a friend in Germany that would send me Brenneke 196 and 198 TUG bullets that he used in his 8x68s, they worked very well, today there are a lot of good quality bullets out there including Nosler, Barnes etc. The only problem is finding a rifle, used 24" 700 BDL's show up from time to time, the Remington custom shop will turn one out for you for a fair exchange of cash and Cooper chambers 8 mag, in a 26" barrel, in fact Clay has one on his site at the moment. The 8 mag was supposed to beat out the 300 Win mag at one end and the 338 Win mag at the other, while it had some advantages over both, they were very minor, and the 185 gr and the 220 gr factory loads just were not up to scratch. Using modern powders and proper bullets the old 8 mag can keep up with the rest of pack no problem. You just have to decide how much you want to spend for the privilege of owning a rifle chambered for a cartridge that spawned many wildcats, any of which were more popular than the parent cartridge.

Other similar options in an easier-to-find rifle would be a 375H&H or 9.3x62. Or if uncommon is your goal, may I suggest the 358 Norma Mag?

If you wanna go more custom I hear the 338 win mag necked up to 375 is quite nice, as is the 338-06 (which wouldn't require a magnum length action). Personally I'd go 9.3x62 for a factory rifle, or 338-06 for a custom build. Of course YMMV.

If you get an 8mm Rem try some 200 gr Barnes TSX or Nosler 200 gr Partitions. Rl 22 is the powder of choice. Quite a long range killer !

I have a semi custom. It started life as a bdl
Then sent to a smith who beaded in wildcat stock. Installed hs presision bottom metal detach mag. Flutted barrel custom machining on bolt and a new bolt handle
Shoots little groups if I do my job. Doesn't kick like some people say. And she sure does kill things.
If your any ware near me pm and your more than welcome to come shoot it.
And everything is for sale. Lol

the rem 8 is a nice calibre. easy to get 3000 fps out of a 24 inch barrel with rel22 and a 200grn partition. even imr 4350 or h4831 will work. its easy to load for. hornady makes a cheap 195 grn il that is good for practice. the recoil is a little sharp but not to bad. if your used to 300 mags its similar. there are a few rem 700's floating around if you look hard enough.
