800 yard running shot

Maybe he actually shot it through the lungs on the first shot at about 700 yards and then it ran 100 yards before running out of air and dropping. He probably missed it the second shot but seen it fall just after that shot and thought that one was the one that did the trick.

this could be it !!!
Shot the animal up close and kept shooting.... 700 yds later, the quarry fell... Voila the shot....

For a novice..no way to make that shot...
I'd bet all the ammo that he can shoot with an area MG and a 200 round belt ... he will not hit the target in 1/2 hour.

just another BS internet story. I was in an airport waiting to go to mexico with my family a few years ago an he claimed he shot his elk at 900 yards, he had his 300 win sighted in 1 foot high at 100 yards beacuse wher he hunted everything was longrange. I remember thinking that might work OK using the truck mirror as a rest but not at 900 yards.

Haha, You run into douchebags like this at the range (100yds, of course) and gunshops all the time. Interestingly enough, a 300WM 12" high at 100 would keep climbing to about +30 at 350, and would still be -70" at 900

Well I know a guy who will take 100 yards as 50 yards and other times 50 yards as 100. With this kind of poor judgement of distance I'm wondering how they could finally harvest their games?

That kind of shot is a hope and a dream for the most experienced hunters/shooters. Even if he practiced 800 yd shots on a moving target(which we all do right? ) its still unethical and stipud!

I never take shots at running game unless I think its wounded already, its just not worth it to me when I know there are so many more animals out there that can be killed with one clean shot.

anybody remeber that asshat from hunt ontario( 300 mag), who last season said he shot a moose at 1000 yrds with his 300 mag, with a 300 yrd zero.....LOL

still cracks me up how he said he aimed for the hump, LOL.....later on in the thread he said he didn't know how long a yard was, LMAO

We do have (at least) one cgn member who harvests deer at these ranges, but he is far beyond the skill most shooters will ever reach - and is of course using a suitable long range rig on a standing deer...

There are 2 possible things happending,

1) He doesnt know the Imperial system and thinks 1 inch is the same as a yard. :p

Or

2) He couldnt judge the distance properly. :p

Anything over 200 yards is a long shot in my books while hunting. Iron sights dont work too well past that range.

In all fairness to all concerened it is possible. Lady Luck would have to have turned Her back on said deer and wrap Her arms lovingly around the shooters neck but it is possible.:)
On the other hand, an untruth is as good as the truth if you can get someone to believe it.:)

Or maybe the deer was shot by another hunter who abandoned it and ran from the area when this guy started shooting wildly in his direction.

Maybe the deer died laughing at an idiot trying to pot it at 800 yards :)

Possible?I think you would have a better chance of being struck by lightning.
Can you just imagine how much lead and hold over it would take at 800yrds.Not to mention having to compensate for wind drift.
After making a horse shoe up the ass shot like that you might wanna go out and buy a lottery ticket.

A couple of responses suggested luck, but the person posting the story became very defensive and insists that his father has 40 years experience hunting and has the skill necessary to make such shots.

ROFL! I'm sure he does have the experience to make that shot - 40 years of bull####ting around a fire and i bet he's learned to come up with all KINDS of whoppers about what he's shot :)

Actually - in fairness an experienced hunter of many decades DID show me how to make an 800 yard shot every time. His trick was to find a good rest, take one and a half breaths, let the sight fall slowly onto the animals vitals.. then walk 750 yards closer and SHOOT! Works like a charm.

I tired to get him to tell me what he was holding at that distance, he said dead on ... at which time I dtermined with full confidence, eh was full of sh11t.

My own feeling is that if the shot was indeed made,it was no more than a fluke.
100% fluke, like winning the lottery, to take a shot like that means you don't know much (about anything probably).

I watched this video and am wondering what type of scope he used for his rifle?! x10? From 1km away a big black bear looks like an ant, and you've got to squeez your pupils real hard. I really don't believe this.
