I'm looking for a few comments from those in the know. How is the quality of say a Vanguard or Venture compared to a mid 80's Winchester 70? I can pick up a model 70 with custom barrel for a decent price, but not sure if I should bother if a new Vanguard or Venture is of equal quality.

I would take that push feed M70 over any of the modern budget guns... including the Vanguard S2.

I have a push feed model 70 from 1973 in 300 win mag and it shoots great. Tough as nails. I would recomend one.

If it was made prior to 1979 (when the workers got all snotted out and Olin decided to pull the plug on rifle making) then I would take it over most sub $1000 rifles being produced today.

I had more than a couple customer service issues with Winchester when the employees owned the plant so wouldn't personally touch any of the junk they produced under the US Repeating Arms banner, at least until after FN took them over.

So if the rifle you are looking at was produced in the 1980's, personally I would pass - but that's just me.

X3 If it was vintage 1964 to 1970ish I would drop it like a hot potato and run as it was just after the big 1964 cut back and restyle and Winchester was making junk. They started to smarten up in the early 70's. I had a 1973 push feed and it was a great gun very accurate and reliable. The FN's that they are producing now are some of the best they ever made. But there is nothing wrong with the vintage your looking at. Don't even try to compare it to a Vanguard S2

This rifle is a very good shooter, a 22-250. After cleaning the barrel, every load I've tried, 5 shots, .75" groups or better. Is that common with Winchesters of the 1970's ? This is with Federal factory rounds, 53gr V-max reloads, and Speers TNT.

Those rifles where built when there was such a thing as quality. I don't personally see the quality in the new stuff. Unless you are ready to pay the price for quality rifles.

I would too. And did. Until my wife saw how much I had saved.
Now its time to start over.

For some reason they don't understand why we NEED more than 1 rifle.
And using the "you have more than 1 knitting needle" somehow doesn't cut it.

:/

Holy $hit Does that ever sound familiar.

My gf is the opposite. She is just as excited as I am for new and more guns.
The other day I asked her what she would say if I came home with a $2000 pair of shoes. The answer I got was "we would have to have a serious talk"
So then I asked What if I came home with a $2000 gun. The answer I got was "Awesome!! Then we would need a matching one for me"
