I recently picked up an 840 Savage bolt rifle. used it 4-5 times at the range to test it & then scope it in for my sons upcoming hunting season. tried it today and it wouldn't fire.pin was barely hitting the primer . small dent at best. multiple shots and not one fired . my first thoughts where - new spring , but when i manualy pull back on the bolt and let it go its still seems very strong.the pin extends well out from the bolt when its in a fired position & out of the gun,but when its in the rifle it dosn't seem to extend far enough... not sure how to describe it. could the bolt be getting hung up and not extending the pin far enough to touch off the round? or do i just need a new spring . this rifle sat for years in a closet without getting used.any help?

If you feel competent with taking it apart, I would check to see if there is any built up crud on the inside of the bolt. Oil, dirt and time make for a bad mix. When reassembling, make sure that you clock the bolt shroud enough for proper protrusion of the firing pin. Failing that, check to see that the cocking piece and trigger are free of the same muck. If things are a little beyond your comfort level, take it to someone that knows.
Good luck.

Yep. Clean it. Particularly the bolt. There might be a spider web in there. More likely to be hardened oil. Just dropping the bolt in a pan of solvent and leaving it there for 24 hours, then blowing it out(helps if you have a compressor. Canned air will do, but it's pricey.) will help. Springs don't lose temper from sitting.
