After shooting I alwasy clean my guns withing 24 hours of leaving the range, regardless of the ammo type that was used. I clean my 858 like all the other guns. Wire brush dipped in nitro, then soaked patch, then dry patch. Repeat patches untill clean.

Here is my problem. This is my first center fire semi-auto that I have owned. My other semi-auto is a Ruger 10/22 (no gas system). I was reading some posts today and someone mentioned cleaning their gas system on the 858. How does one properly clean the gas system on the 858?

Dissasemble the gas sytem. It's not rocket science.

As for cleaning the gas port, just spray it with a solvent, brish it then oil everything.

I think the other point here is it should be cleaned with water first...he did say he was using corrosive, so before the nitro and oil, rinse everything (especially the gas system) with hot water. Once you get the hang of it, it won't take long. Not going into big specifics, but it's the primer that leaves behind the salt residue which will attract moisture...which will quickly result in rust. As far as actually stripping the unit, I'm sure someone on here can point you in the right direction for disassembly instructions (not sure if surplusarms.com has anything on the VS58 etc...)

Take the gun into the bathroom. Hold it over the tub and pour a kettleful of boiling water down the bore and gas system. Use a funnel.

The heat from the water will quickly dry the metal. Wait until it cools and then use normal solvents, brushes and cleaning methods.

Do not oil the gas system. Leave it dry.

I haven't used any solvents at all on my VZ58S yet. I just use hot soapy water, then dry everything off realy good and spray it all again with rem-oil. All I shoot is corrosive ammo, and I haven't had a problem yet.

Bear in mind the 58S is chrome lined, the 858 is not and might require more attention.

True, but I still can't imagine there being much problem if you give everything a good spray/coat of gun oil afterwards.

If you oil over corrosive salts, you may still get corrosion. These are hydroscopic and will attract water and wick it right to your bore's surface if even a little bit of salt is exposed or the oil runs off it or whatever.

Again, True, but that's why I reef the warm soapy water up and down the barrel first.

I always pour boiling water thru, clean normally, then wipe the gas system of my SKS with an lightly oiled patch, then run a dry one over it. The little bit of oil doesnt seem to cause any problems, even on the days I put half a case of surplus through it. It just seems like good insurance to have a light film of it to protect agains rust when i dont get to shoot it for a while.
