Have you VZ and CZ 858 shooters hunted with your 7.62? Any mishaps or horror stories. Alotta guys say dont hunt with them over 125 yards. I say why would I shoot anything further than 80 yards away? well ok the odd time maybe 200 yards....but I think in 5 years further than 30 yards without glasses will be impossible(age thing catching up to me).

Hunting with the 7.62x39 has been covered ad nauseum on the boards here. Bottom line is that with proper loads with soft points and spitzers, it'll do anyhting the 30-30 can do. Sure, the 30-30 start out a little bit quicker, but owing to the more aerodynamic bullet, the 7.62x39 has the edge at a hundred yards.

For all intents and purposes, the 7.62x39 is the same as a 30-30, for better or worse

HI-JACK!!!! 30-30 is better (has bigger bullets with same trjacetory)

ummmmmmm, what? Do you have any substantiation for that baseless statement? No? OK, well, let's run the numbers, eh?

From Hornady #7, we see that a 30-30 can push a 150gr RN at about 2300fps with an impressive 0.186 BC. Flipping over a few pages, we see the 7.62x39 pushing a 150 gr spitzer at 2200 fps. With a BC of .415.

Plugging those numbers into a ballistic calculator, we find that the 30-30 has the following trajectory when zeroed at 100 yards:

Yards Elevation Velocity
0 -1.5 2300
50 .23 2091
100 0 1893
150 -2.72 1709

And for the 7.62x39:
Yards Elevation Velocity
0 -1.5 2200
50 .22 2107
100 0 2017
150 -2.32 1928

So what's this about the 30-30 having a better trajectory, or more downrange power? Shall we look at 170 grain weight class? Well, there is no published data for 168's in the x39, but I've handloaded them to just under 2100 fps in my 7.63x39 bolt action gun. At this velocity, they're packing the same muzzle *energy* as the 150 grain loads, at perfectly acceptable pressure levels. The 30-30 is pushing it's 170gr FP also at 2100. But, for argument's sake, lets say that the x39 is only doing 2k, 100fps less than the 30-30 (the same difference observed in the 150gr weight class). The 170FP has a stunning .189 BC, while the 168 is right around .450. Math time, kids!

30-30
Yards Elevation Velocity
0 -1.5 2100
50 .46 1904
100 0 1722
150 -3.41 1554

And for the 7.62x39:
Yards Elevation Velocity
0 -1.5 2000
50 .43 1919
100 0 1840
150 -3.05 1764

removed snide remark from here....PGW Steve

Best be gettin some sort of optics for your 858 man.

Personally I find it impossible to make a good shot at anything over 40 yards with the iron sights. You wouldnt wanna aim for a deer's heart and end up shooting it's ass off would you?

 40yds? That's most likely not the rifles fault.....unless you got a lemon.

I hunt Caribou with my CZ and anything up to 200yds is easy enough with no optics at all. Though I've never taken a shot at anything over 150, simply because I know with Caribou, I can get closer.

^I had 60 rounds of bosnian igman ammo which didn't feed properly. Maybe it isn't very accurate either?

I'll have to wait till I can get some proper commie surplus stuff before I can pass proper judgement but yesterday both myself and a good friend who is also a pretty good shot weren't able to hit jack all with the iron sights. It was pretty depressing actually :( I doubt I wasn't aiming properly (I've only every used iron sights untill recently when I put a scope on my 10/22)

I hope it's not a lemon :(

Man I've always been happy with ingman. I had to buy the serbian stuff lately though as SIR has slim pickings these days.

^how does igman feed in your rifle?

I get feeding problems every 2 or 3 rounds. The lead point just mashes against the feeding ramp and/or the brass gets mangled by the receiver. I polished the feeding ramp with some 1000 grit and finished off with some emery cloth and the problem isn't as bad (didn't feed at all)...

Ok, I am new to shooting and hunting. I love CZ858, the most comfortable shooting machine I have touched. I like the iron sights and up to 50 yards can kill anything dead on. At 80-100 yards anywhere from 4-8 inches away. I do not know exactly how the iron sights on it work and my buddy tells me to shoot close only hahaha. But we are bow hunting as well.

I am curious the "U" setting is what I hit up to 50 yards with accurately. Any further utilization direction or feedback for aiming with iron sights? Anyone a good teacher that can teach someone to shoot well who has no real experience but is teachable?

I have been shooting bow for 1 year and a bit and love it but want to build my confidence with guns. I am selling...trying to sell.....my sks with synth fold up.....love my cz858, dont mind my 270 savage (but like cz better)....like my mossberg 12 gauge with sabots....and love my tokarev....

I would suggest properly sighting in with your irons. Once you have done that, you should easily be able to hit a coyote sized target out to 300 yds. also, practice alot.

what does that mean exactly to properly sight in?

you can sight the 858 in quite nicely by using the front sight tool that comes with it to raise or lower the front sight.

i did have one with me when i saw the biggest whitetail (really nice 6 point) i have ever seen in my area, unfortunately he was standing in the middle of the forest service road when i drove around the corner, and then just stood 20 yards into the bush when i got out of my truck, so i just fired 2 quick shots over his head hoping that in the future (the last 2 weeks of the season) he wouldn't stand around that particular road
