I just finished reading Mowat's "My Father's Son". I just can't get over how our boys were treated and viewed by their own country when they risked so much, especially the crap the zombies pulled.
It is no wonder my Grampa was all too eager to get out of his "monkey suit" as soon as he got home and discharged in `46.
Each and every one should be honored and respected like the link Superbee posted.
I thought the same thing when I read that book and actually spoke with the man about his experiences - I now have a signed copy. Call me ignorant, but I had no idea that the majority of Canadian Forces during WWII were volunteers - and reviled ones at that. When I think about the 'Conscription Crises' I can't help but feel disgusted.
I might not be the biggest fan of the States; they're far too militaristic, its built into the very heritage - but they give credit where credit is due, or at least did for the 'Greatest Generation' - aptly named. (though Vietnam and to a lesser extent the recent Iraq Wars are exceptions).
