863 Meter shots

It is too bad that many of our modern Milsurp shooters do not believe that you can not hit anything after 300 yards or so unless you have a large scope on top of the rifle.

Many rifles, such as the Mosin-Nagant, Lee Enfields, Swiss K-31, Springfield and Enfield, and yes, even the Carcano can hit those distant tagets if the shooter does his part and good ammunition is used.

When using the .303 out to 1000 yards on a range, it was common practice to use the Number 4 rifle up to 600 yards. At 800 yards, the Number 1 SMLE rifles started coming out of the cases, and on the 1000 yard line, almost ALL of the rifles were Number 1 rifles.

This would be cool to see at a match today. Maybe I just haven't gone to the right ones

My brother and I have a 550 yard spot and we regularily shoot a 10" gong at that range. As buffdog has stated above most of the common bolt actions will make hits repeatedly with decent ammo and a good shooter.

Even an svt will hit a man size target way out there, my brother on our last outing lined up his svt at 550 and although he only made a couple of hits on that 10" gong he sent them all right in there. If the gong was say 18" I think most if not all would have been hits.

I've seen that mentioned on here before but I can't recall if ever saw a reason mentioned for the No1 Mk III being more accurate than the No 4 at extreme long range. Was that with the issue iron sites on the No 1 Mk III and the peep on the No 4 or with match sites on both?

The Carcano can be a accurate rifle with the right ammunition, there is a video of someone shooting 1600m with one, iron sights only. The same guy happens to hold the world record for iron sights shot, I believe it was 2200m with irons from a K31 but I would have to double check as he is constantly breaking his own record.

Virtually everyone is now used to the idea that you can't shoot far without a scope. I love watching the looks on guys faces when I show up at the range and get a better grouping with my iron sighted milsurps then they are getting with there 1000+$ rig.

I've read it has to do with different barrel harmonics between the rifles.

Good on you! I often get guys making fun of me for using iron sights at 300m but I do it for the challenge. Would you be willing to do a tutorial thread about how you achieve your best long range groups with iron sights?
