870 18" Police barrel vs 18.5" express barrel

The police barrel is likely parkerized, improved cylinder whereas the express is cylinder bore with a matt blue finish. I don't think the Police barrel is any thicker but can't say for certain.

Wilson combat and Vang Comp extensions will end flush with the 18" barrel. If it were me, I'd keep the Police barrel.

Other extensions (Tac Star, Choate, I believe) are made to the 18" length. Not as nice as Simon's extensions, but they work.

Are you sure you have a Police barrel on there now? I've owned a ton of 870's and I think all my actual Police barrels were 18.5". Normal ones floating around were all 18". Simon's extension (or the stock Remington for that matter) would be flush on an 18.5" barrel.

Could be wrong though - I'm sure they changed sizing conventions a few times over the years.

If you DO have a confirmed police barrel - keep it - especially if the choke is anything other than CYLINDER. Not worth swapping to the express barrel just for aesthetics.

All new Remington barrels, be they Police or Express, are 18.5". That's a fairly recent change from a couple of years ago. Anything older will be 18", doesn't matter if it's a Police or Express. I prefer 18" myself just because most aftermarket mag extensions fit flush with them.
