870 2-3/4" orig. with new 3" barrel

I juts bought a 26" lightweight remchoke barrel for a wingmaster that was given to me. The original barrel was smooth 30" full choke 2-3/4" chamber. Remington says not to shoot 3" mag out of it with this barrel because the original gun was 2-3/4" despite the new barrel handling 3".
I understand with the semi autos why 3" shouldnt be used, but why not with the pump action? I'm not aware of any difference in the M designated 870s other than the chamber length...

BTW, went with 26" lightweight as it will be a partridge gun with occasional back yard clay shooting . Interested in 3" in case I ever try duck hunting (don't like the taste of duck). The full choke is darker metal and says for lead or steel on it.

check the length of the ejection port, make sure the spent shell will eject. thats the only thing i can think of.
 
You should be able to shoot 3" shells in a 3" barrel on a 2 3/4" receiver. Check the ejection port length it should be the same as on a 3" receiver . ( the only reason for checking is you said it was given to you - so it may be quite old and I'm not sure about very old 870s) I have a 1980 wingmaster and the port length is the same.

Be aware though that the gun may not eject 3 inch empties smoothly & you may have to remove them with a finger. This is because the bump on the 2 3/4 inch ejector is 1/4 inch forward relative to the biump on a 3 inch ejector. this means that it hits the shell sooner and the mouth of a 3" shell may not have cleared the front of the ejection port.

All you have to to to clear the ejection issue is to replace the ejector. this involves removing the old one and riveting the new one in place through the left side of the receiver wall, so the color may not match unless you reblue ( if that matters to you.) All replacement Remington ejectors have been 3 inch for many years
 
I have a 3" barrel on a 2 3/4" Remington 870 frame and made the mistake of firing a 3" cartridge in it. The firing went okay but when I tried to eject the empty shell , it would not come out the ejection port because the ejector was trying to eject the shell too soon. The only way to get the case out was remove the barrel or use a screw driver and fold and mangle the case out the port. It seems all that is needed to make a 2 3/4" gun into a 3" gun is a new 3" ejector and a new 3" barrel. The problem is the ejector is rivited to the left side of the frame and after replacement the frame usually needs to be refinished. If you are planning on refinishing anyway installing a 3" ejector would be a good idea. The larger ports are on the 3 1/2" super magnum 870.
 
Thanks guys, it isn't worth doing any work to allow for 3" as it's a partridge gun, on the odd chance I go for ducks I can use 2-3/4 mag I guess.
I never thought of the ejector, odd they'd make seperate designs for the mag, I take it the 870 M doesn't have the 1100 issue with light loads in a mag gun...
