So, I just bought a +2 mag extension (the tube only, not a kit) and need to know what more I need.

I have a newer-model Express that Remington, in its infinite wisdom, decided to limit to 5 rds. by default.

Right now there is a little round bit at the end that pushes down over two little dimples and then rotates 90° to stay in place, the mag follower I believe.

I know that I have to somehow remove the dimples; dremel or press them out. I know (because it won't even reach all the way to the end) that I'll need a new spring. But is that it? Does the original follower just sit on top?

And what if I remove the extension, say for hunting? How does the follower stay in once I've removed the dimples? I understand there is a different system on the 870 police models, how does that work?

And finally, I did some extensive googling and couldn't find an 'exploded' parts-diagram for the 870 - seeing as it's the most common shotgun in the world, I find that a little baffling, prehaps I just didn't know how to search. (but I'm sure I covered all the variations of what it could be) Does anyone have one or a link to one?

Thanks, y'all...

Oh, and here's some pictures for ya...

You need a new spring +7 and you can drill out those dimples with a drill then file it smooth, You wont see the holes because the mag cap or +2 ext will cover it.

For hunting all you gotta do is put a wooden dowel behind the follower and screw on the mag ext. Thus only allowing 2rds in the tube.

The worst thing that'd happen is if you drill the holes (remove dimples) and then decide to go back to the short tube... you will just need to be careful when you unscrew the cap (the spring will be under pressure)

When you are screwing the cap on, just stick a little piece of something in the hole to keep the plastic cap from twisting with the mag-cap :) (that probably isn't even necessary)

Mmmmmmm... shotgun and pistol :D Anything else required? Not really ;) heheheh

The dimples drill out easily, especially if you have a drill press. I mangled the plastic plug before I did the adaptation so i didn't much care if it went back in. Cut some dowelling to redo the plug for both with the extension off and on. The cap holds the plug and spring just fine without the retainer and it doesn't give you any grief when you take it off, unless the tube is full of shells... Yes, you do need the longer spring, and Repete might have more barrel clamps to support the extension.
