A question for the shotgun guru's out there. What would be a good barrel length for a 870 express shotgun. My main question is what would be a good barrel lenght for good handling and good range. Would there be much difference between a 14 inch and a 18 inch barrel; as far as range and recoil. I'm mainly interested in shooting slugs and buckshot. Any opinions would be appreciated.

if you are serious about good performance and not just a mean looking zombie gun, I wouldn't go less than 22" and I would have a choke tube for both buckshot (mod) and maybe a rifled one for slugs (or IC). If you just want to look like a tactical cop wannabe or a member of the trench coat mafia, then go shorter.

I have an 870 with the 18" and my brother has the HP9-1 14" 870 copy. The 14" seems to have more recoil, but that could be due to the noise, followed by the flame;) Personally I like the 18" because it holds more ammo, but it depends on your needs. However, the 14" looks bada$$, and it handles a little better.

Either way, let us know what you get.

I'm partial to an 18" barrel as well--especially with slugs since you won't need a choke anyway. For me, it's the best balance between mag capacity and the handiness factor.

The difference between my 870MM and HP9-1 in terms of felt recoil is minimal. The norc will pattern well out to 20 yards. The 14" config is by far the most handy, and my personal fav. :D
