Hi All

I am looking at getting a new barrel for my shotgun. I don't have a lot of experience with shotguns and was wondering if I get an some help.

Here is the barrel I am looking at:

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/876039/remington-barrel-remington-870-wingmaster-12-gauge-3-26-rem-choke-with-improved-cylinder-modified-and-full-chokes-vent-rib-standard-contour-bradley-front-sight-and-middle-bead-blue

Remington Part#:24582

I was wondering if this barrel would be ok to shoot rifled slugs (Deer hunting) out of this barrel? I am not sure if I want to get a short 20" barrel. My current barrel is a 30" barrel for ducks and geese. I am looking for a barrel that is going to be versatile for multiple applications. Any help is appreciated.

Slug barrels come up often on the EE under Shotgun - Parts section. I would just wait for one. And that one @Midway is on backorder so who knows when one might arrive. I've never ordered from Midway so I have no idea on their turn around times.

The quick answer is "yes", the barrel pictured would be fine for slugs. "improved Modified" should be no problem for slugs. The barrel pictured mentions "Rem Choke", which is actually removeable/changeable chokes, these are the chromed chokes that screw in and out, so the same barrel can do multiple duties.

Thing is, you don't have to limit yourself to that size, you could pick one that's a "cylinder bore", or say a 20" barrel that uses Remchokes. The other day I saw a "Magpul edition" Remington 870, and it's barrel was around 20". Thing is, while that was really intended as a "tactical" shotgun, the "muzzle standoff" that Remington uses is the same threads as Remchoke...allowing you to remove that device and put in any kind of Rem Choke including a "Full Choke" similar to your 30" barrel, and then swap chokes or put in the slug standoff device for slugs.

if you want a barrel for the 870, just post what you want as a "wanted" in the EE.

Just to offer you some other options, you can buy a Maverick 88 slug gun for a few buck less than a new Remington factory barrel.

Or you can buy a Remington express with 20" IC barrel and sights for $360ish and sell the stocked receiver for about $250 on the EE.
$30 rebate on this shotgun until Dec 2013.

Or you can source an 870 Express with 26" remchoke barrel and sell it's receiver and stock.

Make sure you get exactly what you want, or you'll be spending money again getting what you really wanted in the first place.

"...looking for a barrel that..." Yep, that one would do nicely. It won't be as good as rifle sighted barrel for slugs though. Bead sights just aern't as accurate.
Like Sobored says, a barrel with Remington stamped on it will cost about $100 more. Bought a 20" slug barrel a few years back for a bit over $200 with taxes. The same barrel from Remington was $100 more.
"...MidwayUSA doesn't ship to Canada..." Absolutely not. They got caught doing so several years ago and got slapped, hard, by the U.S. State Dept.
