Hey guys, I've decided I'd like the protection of a marine magnum since I'm often working in a very damp environment. The only problem is they are a little bit on the long side for me. I would love to have a knoxx stock and a 14 inch barrel on a marine mag. Can you legally have a gunsmith cut and crown the 18 inch barrel down to 14 inches or is that too short to cut down? Is the only option to buy a 14 inch barrel that is factory built? Can you easily remove the magazine extension that extends beyond the foregrip? Also does anyone know if there are marine coated 14 inch barrels anywhere?

Thanks for your help fellow gun nuts.

You can't have a barrel cut down by yourself or a smith to past 18.5".

For a short barrel you would probably be best to purchase a can ammo, dlask or norinco with a factory 8, 12 or 14" barrel and have it refinished. I am not aware of any marine magnums that came with factory short barrels.

Nice 206.

Aren't some of the gun kote type finishes pretty good for all conditions? Thought I saw a thread here last year where a guy Baked on a Gun Kote finish on an old receiver or barrel, then left it in a pale of salt water for a whiel. It was fine when it came out.

Hmm interesting point maybe I should just try to find the cheapest 14 inch 870 I can find and buy a knox. Get it parkerised or something. Even if it gets messed up after awhile just repeat process minus the stock.

That was me. Here is the part we did that to.

Metal refinished with gun kote won't rust under normal conditions. Blood won't affect it, salt water won't, heck it will last for an hour in hydrocloric acid!

However you can scratch it off like any finish if you hit it hard enough on a sharp object.

FYI..Marine Magnums will rust. Mine has small spots of rust on it.
It's going to be refinished in gun kote when I find the time.

Well I am more impressed with my can ammo clone than my true remy 870 express. I am sure it would be different from say a wingmaster or similar but not even close in price.

The difference is,

.. one is a 14" and one is a 12.5"
..one say's made in China on it and the other does not...both are made in the same plant in China

I'd go with the Dominion Arms Grizzly.
You can always trade for a 14 inch barrel if you want to but the 12.5 is pretty handy...only reason to get a 14" would be for a mag extension.

The Grizz and Norc both come with a parkerized type finish and if you degreased them and then guncoated them they should hold up pretty good!

There are a few people in Canada that can paint it for you if you don't want to do it yourself

Here's a picture of a Remington 870 with the Knoxx SpecOps and a Grizzly 12.5" barrel...a regular or short length of pull butt stock would make the package narrower if space is really tight on board.
