870 Cleaning

Does anyone have a link to info on how to take apart an older 870 Wingmaster? I wanted to take it apart so i can do a thorough cleaning. I've searched the net and couldn't find anything.

Step 1: Remove barrel - Remove the cap on the end of the mag tube, unlock the action (ie: slide pump towards stock) and pull barrel off.

Step 2: Remove slide bars/forend and bolt. This part is tricky. Basically, you need to move the slide forward, while depressing a little part inside the receiver (I think it's the 'shell retainer' just outside the mag tube). The bolt and action bars should come out together.

Step 3: Remove trigger pins. This part is easy. Simply find a punch/screwdriver and lightly tap the pins out (either way, although one way MIGHT be easier). Once the pins are out, the trigger group drops out.

This is the extent of which you should strip it down. Don't mess with the trigger assembly, as a simply light brushing/degunking will be more than adaquate.

So you broke down and bought a 12G eh? I hope you enjoy it a lot. There are 2 schools of thought on cleaning the trigger group. The first is immersing it in solvent and giving it a good bath (gently agitating the group), letting it dry, then lubing it lightly. The second is gently brushing it using an old but clean toothbrush to knock the crud loose. I use the varsol methos a couple times a year to make sure it gets good and clean. The rest of the time I use the dry brush method and a light lube. The toothbrush is a cheap and effective way to clean out tight areas where you may not get a larger cleaning brush. You also aren't out a lot of money if you lose it in the bush, or at camp.
