Another nutter’s thread got me thinking again of a low cost DIY light rail mounted off the stock Rem mag tube extension clamp, I like that the factory clamp has a bottom mounted sling swivel.

I wanted to make this with parts I already have with my time as the only thing it took to set up, everything but the light that is. The factory screw is a #12-24 sized screw, which I have a tap and die for. I turned down a larger diameter bolt on the lathe to make the #12-24 screw, profiling the hex bolt head into a taper slot head. The section or picatiny rail was left over from a magwedge gen3 rail I gave to a family member and I have a spare 1” weaver ring from a previous light mount on a different gun.
I originally drilled and tapped the rail to accept the #12-24 screw going through the clamp but ended up drilling it bigger to take the screw, which was the easiest way to get it all to snug up and be tight. The backside of the rail had to filed flush and profiled to fit the curve of the clamp as well to angle the flashlight to line up with the muzzle once mounted, I oil blackened the new screw and painted the backside of the rail. Things mounted flush and tight with next to no movement, I pulled a light and ring off a different 12g to test thing for fit and beam alignment. It illuminates the rifle sights in the dark enough to line up the sights and lights up the front fiber optic, depending on my final light and mount choice I can use either of the rail holes to position the rail and light closer or farther from my hand. Total cost $0, just have to pick a light up.
