870 Express or 870 Wingmaster

Guys, I was so weirded out I went to Lebaron again today AND stopped by Gunco. ALL the expresses in the rack had sandblasted Aluminum trigger guards. No ####!

I also talked to Jason Spencer in person and he said they were all Aluminum.

I've seen at least 100 expresses in the last 5 years and I've NEVER seen plastic!

P.E. Islander nice pic of old Albert in your avatar! Some great Canadian history there my son.

cheers Darryl
P.S. I prefer the Wingmaster. Just a better quality gun. Used ones are very affordable too!

I'm pleased to know that somone knows who it is! My dad had a copy of the book "The Mad Trapper of Rat River", I must have read it a dozen times and it never ceases to intrigue/amaze me. Gonna get me a Savage 99 in 30/30 WCF one of these days...

Unless your gun was pre-owned and someone armacoated it or spray painted it then you are wrong.

The Express finish is a raw sandblast that's been BLUED. And yes, it does tend to rust. In fact, a paint finish would likely IMPROVE durability. Alot of guys Gunkote/Armacoat/Duracoat them.

I have to ask, on what information do you base the "sandblasted/blued" statement?

I don't claim to know the finishing process used on every Express 870 ever made. Perhaps there have been different finishing processes used over the years, however all the ones I have seen around here are a dark grey color, not blued or blackened. This grey finish is a coating not bluing of any sort. I assume, based on the appearance, that it is a baked on electrostaticly applied finish.

The Express Remingtons that I owned were bought new. Years ago our local dealer bought direct from Remington, and I saw the pallets of guns and ammo. The finish on these guns was NOT Sandblasted and blued, I know what that type of finish looks like.

At any rate we can agree that it rusts easily.

I think you're thinking of beadblasted and blued. It looks nothing like that, true. But Sandblasted and blued is a way rougher finish that LOOKS like a coating. Also it tends to look grey, not blue.

Do a net search, all the web sites list the finish as blast/blue. Also my gunsmith says it's a blasted blue and he's a Remington authorized service center.

i just got rid of my express mag sp it would also jam all the time i sent it back and it was fixed twice an internal spring or something i got kind of a wishy washy answer as too what the problem was so i got pissed off and traded it for a benelli super black eagle 2 and that is a magnificent gun now i know it is not in the same league as the remington so i will not compare my buddy that i duck hunt with bought a rem mag sp at the same time i bought mine (we bought together) and he has really not had any trouble witht the gun until he got it really dirty(mud and all kinds of sh!t in it)so who knows i used mine alot more than he does i shot alot of skeet with mine maybe that was it but he has no problems and i had nothing but go figure

The newer expresses have alot of MIM parts. I don;t know if any of the springs are MIM or not, but if so, I couls see a high incidence of spring fatigue as a result.

That being said, the Express I shoot now is an older one with no MIM.

I have both ... the express is a real workhorse. 28 inch...killed more birds than wingmaster
Wingmaster has a contoured barrel and is slicker and lighter and fits better to shoulder..finish and checkering and wood is better..30 inch barrel....either one is used as a back up when I travel

My Remington 870 Super Magnum has a plastic trigger guard. I've blased a few turkey loads and a couple cases of 3.5" steel shot and not 1 jam yet. :D

Well shoot - none of my Remmys have that J lock nor that plastic TG. Remind me not to buy any new ones as those "features" would turn me right the f@ck off.

Best of both worlds

I own a wing master which i picked up dirt cheap.
You know smothe action nice wood all that stuff. I bought an
express vent rib online here. I like the action over the express but
prefer the matte barrel for trap. No glare. If your not picky on the finnish
you can buy a wingmaster dirt cheap and customize it cheaper than a new express. Well at least mine was. 300 total for action, wood barrel.
I know its the same price but what you finnish with is much nicer.
Also my Bro owns the express and loves his.
Good guns both of them
