Hi guys,

Forgive me if this is topic has been covered extensively, but I was unable to find specifically what I am looking for with the search function.

So I own an 870 Express Super Mag which is my only gun and I've obviously developed some affection for it, but I am having a similar problem with rusting that it seems is endemic to the Express models.

In the 3 years that I've owned it I've been what I think is very meticulous about cleaning (although being my first gun I could be neglecting some step that is just not obvious to a first timer.) I normally coat the gun down with gun oil when I finish cleaning with solvent to try and keep this rust in check, but it does not seem to want to stop.

I have also stopped leaving the gun in its case thinking that perhaps the case is absorbing some of the oil and leading to rust.

Could anyone who knows for sure maybe go over their methods for keeping this rust in check? This gun may not be much but she bagged my my first ducks and I'd love to be able to keep it for years to come.

Thanks for your time and replies in advance!

Keeping it in a case (esp with foam) is a bad idea.

I keep mine in a cabinet with a silicon sock (crappy tire $10) and it doesn't seem to rust anymore.

Also, buying a cheap desiccant to throw in the cabinet/safe is a good plan. Although I think they take out more moisture than what is necessary sometimes.

Maybe a check your storage area with a hygrometer. My old basement was super high humidity (70%+) and everything rusted pretty fast. Brought things upstairs and it stopped.

One of the overlooked steps in gun maintenance is letting a gun thoroughly dry before you clean, oil and put it away. When I get home from a hunting trip, I leave the gun in a rack near my workbench for at least 24hrs to make sure it dries out sufficiently. I do this even when the gun hasn't gotten wet, simply because condensation can build from temp changes. When I am done that, I wipe it off with a dry cloth, and then I use a product like G96 on it.

I have an 870 super mag and I love it, but mine is a camo version and they seem to be much more rust resistant than the parkerized models. If nothing seems to stop the rust, you can have the gun powder or dura-coated.

Also, pay attention to the humidity of wherever you may be storing it,

Patrick

Thanks for the tips guys.
I actually do live in a basement, so I'm assuming the humidity is not doing me any favours as you guys said.
I have left it out of the case for the last little while, and I usually do leave it out for a day or two before I clean it mostly due to time constraints.
I will look into getting one of the products you guys have mentioned. I live in Toronto so I suppose whichever is easiest to find at a place like Flaherty's or maybe Bass Pro in a pinch. Up until now I've just been trying to keep a coat of RemOil on it.
I've actually considered having it refinished, I called the number for Tactical Ordinance last week but no one picked up, still haven't bothered to email them yet.
Anyways I'll probably have the time to run and grab one of the suggested products this weekend, I'll let you all know how it turns out.
Thanks again.

Where are you storing the gun? If its in a steel cabinet the cheapest way to fight the humidy and rust problem is make the cabinet air tight as possible and to install a low wattage light bulb. Something to generate a little bit of heat to keep the area warm and dry(not hot).

Silicone gun sock for storage in the cabinet, but before she's put away, it's oiled completely. The parkerized finish on the 870 has like a bazillion little dimples - gotta make sure oil's in each little pore.
