I am thinking about buying a Remington 870 express tactical for IPSC and turkey hunting. Have any of you used this gun in such an application? How good is it?

Thanks!

I have the Express Magnum, I like it.. The gun hates Winchester shells, though, only lets me feed Federal for some reason.
You really can't go wrong with an 870, easy to take apart and clean, and it's about as simple as it gets.

I just want to warn you that there are going to be a lot of people chiming in with various experiences on the Remington 870 Express. They range from "once I cried while in the same room as my 870 Express and it rusted through and crumbled into dust" to "I was sailing around the world and lost my anchor so I used my 870 Express as an anchor AND paddle while firing 50,000 rounds and not a single jam or spot of rust." It's going to be really hard to listen to the qualitative feedback you get, unfortunately. Just try to take every piece of advice with a grain of salt.

I myself have had 2 870 Expresses and have had no problems yet... but I have not yet put thousands of rounds through like others have. I also work at a range that has a couple of Expresses and one crapped out recently (the other is going on strong) but it was a few years old and keep in mind it was a range gun... at a range that doesn't require a PAL so it wasn't treated like an owner would (hopefully) treat theirs. Oh it didn't completely die, I don't know what the problem was but it was fixed so it didn't even crap out beyond repair.

ha:ha:ha:

thanks for the good laugh

Remingtons QC is spotty, hence the varying opinions you are going to get. You may get a great one, but you could also get a lemon.

I have one, and it jams after almost every shot (target/trap rounds). I am going to polish the chamber to try and alleviate the problem, hopefully its an easy fix.

The 870 Police Magnum is much higher quality and all steel parts, with proper parkerization. If you're looking for a tactical shotgun, it is a much better buy than the less expensive 'tactical' line of shotguns.

Thanks for the info guys!

Now have any of you tried it for IPSC and/or Turkey hunting?

I have a couple of 870's, one is a tactical. Don't know about IPSC, but I like mine as a turkey gun. With an aftermarket choke, the shorter barrel is much handier for me than the typical 24-inch tube on most turkey guns. Experts have told me the shorter barrel won't pattern as well, but I've shot a lot of paper with both lengths of barrel and can see no difference. The pistol grip stock is much more comfortable to hold motionless for long periods of time than a standard stock, and lets you handle recoil well. Mine has the fixed length solid stock, and I wish that it was the Knoxx stock instead...not for recoil reduction, but to allow easy lenght reduction. I am seriously thinking about taking an inch off the the solid stock. I'm 6'2" with long arms and neck, but the crouched sitting position for turkey hunting would be better with a shorter stock, and lets you shoulder the gun more easily with a bit less movement. The ghost ring sights are perfect for turkey use.

Overall I'm very satisfied with 870's, no problems at all with mine over the years.

I never let my guns see me cry. I wouldn't blame them for rusting if they did.
