Good day gents,

As titled, I just discovered a barrel bulge/ring in my 870, a small ring maybe 3 inches from the chamber. You can't really see it from the outside... I missed it for years. I only noticed it when I got bored today and decided to do a detailed cleaning on this thing and started looking closer when some "fouling" wouldn't go away. The scary part is: I don't know how long its been there or if it came that way from the factory, as I can recall seeing this slight ring as long as I've had it (bought it at crappy tire in 2015) and just assumed it was fouling. It appears as a shaded area just past the chamber. Shot maybe 100 rounds through it, if that.

It's chambered in 3" and 2 3/4" and I've only ever shot commercial 2 3/4 buckshot and slug through it, no reloads. No stupid tricks either, so I don't know how it got that way.

Anyway, my problem is sourcing a spare because this model has the 6 round tube right from the factory, so standard barrels don't fit. Now that Remington is defunct I don't see any source for new parts, though I still see some new whole guns up for sale. Does anyone know of a source for these things?

Thanks!

Double check that with some calipers but the Outside diameter of the tube should be .999". You could cut a sleeve from round metal tubing with a 1" inside diameter to cover the gap of a regular barrel. What holds the barrel in is the locking block assembly so it should work but I'm not an expert.

bbl's are tapered

if you can't see the bulge from the outside or feel where it raises from the standard bbl size it should not be a issue
what you really need is a inside micrometer so you could measure the difference between the bore size and the bulge airea

You need a 25077 tactical to express barrel spacer.
Remington part #F402819
Currently unavailable, butvtry Ebay for an aftermarket solution/copy
This will allow you to use any of "regular" barrels to fit correctly
.

For illustration It fits like this.

Of course what you'll get is a black metal spacer, not pvc pipe like the above prototype mock up experiment

I went years without seeing it or feeling it while the barrel was installed on the gun, but when you take it off and hold it up to the light, you can just see it. There's a dark visible ring inside the barrel as well, and when I ran a 'feeler' rod inside, I could feel the dip in the ring.

Thanks a lot for the part no! I was aware of the PVC pipe solution, but was wondering if a better one existed, and I'll definitely keep my eye open for that part, or maybe even have one made.

In the event I don't find one, do you have the dimensions for a spacer handy?

Is it possible you are seeing the barrel forcing cone when you look down the barrel?IMG_5101.jpegIMG_5227.jpeg

That's what I thought it was initially (and I wanted it to be this), and my barrel does indeed resemble that image, however what I'm seeing is a good 4-5 inches down the barrel from the breech end, and there is a noticeable bulge ring around the outside of the barrel where it's located. It's hard to see, maybe only a few thousandth's of an inch outside the normal barrel profile, but I can feel it externally and see it when I hold it up to the light.

Now... maybe the forcing cone is truly that deep on this model of barrel, and maybe 2015 era Remington's had QC that was bad enough to have it show... I dunno, it's why I came here.

1" diameter, 4⅞" long

Thank you!

At least now I can get a barrel for skeet.

You can barely make it out, more so if you zoom in, but you can definitely feel it.

Or am I paranoid and this is nothing to worry about?

Here is my take .... if there is a bulge on the outside of the barrel .... that you can see, feel and measure ... and especially if it is located that close to the chamber ... then I would not take any chances ... and I would replace that barrel. Such a bulge likely did not come from the factory like that.

Now Remington 870 barrels can withstand an enormous amount of pressure ... Tom Roster tested an 870 barrel once and it only burst at 55,000 psi.

So, that barrel might still shoot fine for thousands of rounds .... but how do you know for sure?

I can clearly see it, but it wouldn't bother me were it mine. I say send it. It's either a manufacture flaw, or a 12 ga squib was stuck and shot out. I've never heard of the latter ever occurring.

What he means is that the barrel thickness 2 inches from the chamber is not the same as 4 inches from the chamber.
He was talking about a spacer that slides over the mag tube to take up the space between the barrel ring and the mag tube cap, not a spacer that slides over the barrel.

***Never mind, I see the spacer tube has been posted.

How many rounds have you put through it since you bought it? I don’t know if I’d be all that concerned about it, has it ever affected shot patterns or accuracy with slugs?

Maybe about 100 or so, the patterning seems normal and the slugs hit where I aim, though I never tested for accuracy.

My concern is the potential of my 870 blowing up inches from my head.

Was wondering if anyone here had a similar experience with a Cerberus/Freedom Group era Remington
