870 Express versus 870 Police...my experience and opinions

How much did you sale it for? I'm looking for a remington 870 and this one in the pic is what exactly I want.
If you're patient, one will come up on the EE.

badboybeeson (another super-talented guy with S&J Hardware) JUST sold a vintage police-rebuilt Wingmaster like alpining's... only a week ago or so. Check this beauty out... I was tempted to buy it but I'm too happy with mine.

The police model has heavier mag spring and heavier extractor. It is purpose built for rough use under extreme conditions. It is also more friendly to after market add ons. The finish is true park not paint. You can build a police clone from an express but I think the final cost would be about the same. Don't get me wrong the Express is a very good gun but it is not a Police 870. Of course most are purchased by PD's and government who are not always spend thrifty.

I'm the lucky guy that bought the above-pictured vintage Wingmaster from alpining... who is a master craftsman when it comes to gunsmithing IMHO, as well as a true gentleman.

When I unpacked it I was a bit taken by the honey-walnut refinish job on the police furniture... looked better than the EE photos and even better than the browner walnut on my 870P. Inside was a package with the original carrier dog spring, mag spring and follower, original end cap and some other parts which were replaced or upgraded, and I knew I was dealing with a guy who cared about his guns.

I have a bunch of pumps... a newer 870P, Mossberg 590A1, Benelli Supernova and Ithaca M37... and I'm not about to compare them as they are all very strong in subtly different ways, but this old Wingmaster truly is special -- even among those great guns. Maybe it's the age of it, but it's slickity-chik-chik SMOOTH and I haven't had a single hang-up with all sorts of ammo.

There are guns I will sell or trade -- but this one is going to my sons when I'm gone.
Thank you again, alpining. I can truly understand the twinge of seller's remorse on this one! :p

Haha, thanks for the kind words, amigo! As long as she gets used and appreciated! :)

870 police has

-parkerized finish "way more rust resistant and durable"
-Stronger mag spring
-Metal trigger mech
-Milled extractor
-extra QC check
-non dimpled mag tube
-barrel support has detent for mag Ext

New 870 marine magnum, apparently built on the "Express" platform, has:

-Nickel plated finish "the most rust resistant and durable"
-Standard mag spring
-Polymer trigger guard
-MIM extractor (fyi, tacord sells milled extractors for $14)
-non dimpled mag tube
-barrel support has detent for mag Ext (comes with 6 rounder)
-R3 Recoil pad

So I guess it's a blend between the two. I put the milled extractor away for future need. I suspect I'll never need it. I prefer the polymer trigger guard, and I couldn't care less for a stiffer mag spring. I guess I picked the right 870 for me. :)

I recently put a set of Vang Comp sights on a Marine Magnum for a friend of a friend. I was disappointed to find a polymer trigger guard on it. It is a pretty expensive 870 Express! Give me an old Wingmaster any day.

I have never seen a problem with the poly trigger mechs yet. Remingtons biggest problem latey is sticky chambers "there ethier under sized or burred"
I fixed afew with a 12ga bore honer and it solved the issue. Second issue is the Civi guns have weak mag springs and have a crappy finish.

Just buy a Express Home defender and have the gun dura coated, honed and have the mag spring changed. People think the 870P is special and made to a higher standard to the Express. There built on same parts minus trigger mech, extractor, mag spring and the police get a park finish.
