870 extraction issues

I have an 870 I purchased used a while back and every once in a while, usually after the first shot, the slide won't move. If I reef on it a few times it will slide free but it takes a fair amount of force.

The other issue is occasionally the spent shell will not get extracted and I have to pump a second time to get an extraction.

I'm not sure if the two are related but I suspect they are. Maybe a worn extractor? I'm not 100% sure what to look for.
 
Make sure your not using any Winchester "Universal" ammunition... :puke::puke::puke:

The 870s Ive owned in the past never extracted that well at all, but I also agree with the above post, slicking up the chamber will/should improve your function on the 870 for sure. :D
 
Mine did some thing like that when it was new. A few thousand rounds seemed to help. I also disassembled the receiver and polished any rough parts, and lubricate it. Perhaps pick up some 3"magnum loads as they will force open the chamber for you any ways.. Trial by fire? :)
 
As others have noted, the problem is a combination of rough chamber finish and poor quality (steel base) ammunition. Plenty of tutorials on the web about polishing your 870 chamber. Just be careful not to change the effective dimensions of the chamber, or alter the headspace.

Or stop using the absolute cheapest ammo out there. I've never had a problem with any brass-based ammo, even the cheapest. YMMV.

I was using Fiocchi trap loads, Federal LE buck and Remington slugs.

I think the extraction issues may have been primarily with the trap loads but I didn't do enough shooting with it to say for sure.

I guess I'm just used to my old 870 that cycled everything flawlessly. I'll do some googling on polishing the chamber and see if that helps.
