870 Extractor Issue

Hi All,
I have an 870 Tactical I picked up from a respected CGNer on the EE that I fully disassembled and cleaned today ahead of taking it out to put my first rounds through it. After reassembly it cycled beautifully, nice and smooth and everything went fine. I decided to run a few practice shells through it but found they weren't being ejected consistently. If I cycled quickly it would jam but if I slowed down it would eject. I'm familiar with the Express extractor issues so wanted to consult CGN for advice. Is it the weight of the practice shells or is it the extractor?

Any thoughts or suggestions are very much appreciated!

I bought a brand new 870 express yesterday, took it up the hill with 100rds, and out of those 75, there were probably 10 extraction failures. I had to force the fore-end back with both hands to extract the shell. I was using 2 3/4 federals, and jammed no matter how fast I fired. My friend says they just need a few hundred rounds through to get them worked in. More than likely its just the extractor issue.

As far as a solution goes... does anyone have an opinion on having the chamber polished and/or replacing the extractor+ extractor spring with the parts from an 870 police?

I was researching this lately myself. I found very many references describing the benefits of a careful chamber polishing, especially when using cheap (Walmart) ammo.

A questions for you. Have you examined the rims of the shells that gave you trouble? Is there any evidence of the rims being malformed from the extractor? How does your chamber look? Shiny? Can you feel rings? Rusty or dirty.

What kind of shells were you using, cheap Winchester, etc.?

I took a flap grinder on a drill to the chamber in my Grizzly 870. I had the exact same problem as you BEFORE I polished it and no problem to speak of 200 shells AFTER the polishing. Get the smallest flap grinder you can find. The one my friend and I used had to be worn down quite a bit before it would comfortably fit inside the chamber. A little in-out, in-out is all you need. If the problem persists, give it another short treatment until your shell stops binding inside the chamber. I don't believe it's an extractor issue.

What kind of practice shells, real dummy shells or A-Zoom metal snap caps? If its the latter, they differ quite a bit from real ammo in both weight and rim dimensions and aren't really meant to test cycling function.

They were in fact A-Zoom snap caps, thanks for weighing in. I was hoping it would just be the weight difference between them and actual spent shells. Thanks!
