I'm sure there is a thread about this, but I can't find it.

My 870 (express super mag.) likes to hold on to spent shells.
What can I do to fix this problem?

It's very common, the 870 is known for this problem.
Contact the place you bought it from for warranty.

you more than likely have a burr or rough spot in the chamber.

polish the chamber: wrap some fine steel wool around a 12g bore brush, mount the rod in a power drill and use a bit of oil. Lather, rinse, repeat.

This is pretty common with cheap shells in my experience. To resolve quickly in the field, place one hand on the fore stock and the the other outside the trigger guard holding down the catch lever. Then simply slam the butt of the shotgun on the ground. When the shotgun hits the ground, your hand on the fore stock will continue to move and this will eject the shell usually the first time.

My 870 has done this since day one. I've tried polishing the chambers, and it didn't seem to help. I've put over 1000 cheap shells through it, trying to break it in. This seems to have helped a bit. The one true fix that I found was to use shotgun shells in which the hulls are perfectly smooth with no ribbing. This is a real pain, and is the primary reason why I bought a Mossberg. I still have the 870, but if I need to depend on one of them......the Remington stays in the cabinet.

I have the same problem with Windchester shells.

I switched to Federal about 4 boxes ago and its only jammed once since. Im blaming that jam on a friend that didnt rack it hard enough and not the ammo.

This winter I might have a go at the polishing...even though it pisses me off I have to do this with a brand new firearm. An 870 no less.

I had the same problem with an Ithaca 37 (pump action) and found out it was caused by the dimension of the rim of the shell (low cost CTC ammo). The extractor would not catch properly because of the dimension.

I switched to better quality ammo and never had the problem again.

I would try different manufacturers first and then if some don't extract, check the dimension differences.

I'm not saying that this is your problem but it would be worth checking.

Ok, break out your tinfoil hats; in my opinion Remington might have made their chamber too tight on purpose so that Winchester bulk ammo will get stuck.

This is simply a theory I have and there is no way you can talk me out of it.

SOLUTION:

Buy a Winchester ;)
I've seen Remingtons jam many times & never seen a Winchester jam (besides, as mentioned above, "weak racking").

Blaming the ammo is usually a good place to start but if it works perfectly well in all other shotguns, IT'S NOT THE AMMO!

I know 870s are the "preferred" law enforcement scatter gun, but law enforcement can afford to feed them the good stuff.

My 2 cents ;()

I've never had issues with any ammo, also asked everyone I know with an 870 and they to never had a problem. If I get another new 870 and this happens I would send it back for replacement or proper repair.

Its true, Winchester shells the bases are made of either a different matterial or thinner, but my 870 along with both of my other buddies 870's disliked the stuff. Jammed continuously.

i've got the same problem with the 870 and i've tried lots of different ammo. black cloud is no better but when i buy it in 3" for some reason the shorter rnd helps but that black cloud recipe keeps me reaching out and touching ducks. tried cleaning up the chamber but not with steel wool. i just don't know what to do now

Actually, I picked up some already used Winchester cheap hulls at the range and cut off the crimp just to see how they would cycle. Even after being fired, they were hard to extract and eject out of the gun. It took a lot more effort. My express eats Federals fine. About 250 rounds of it. Also 50 rounds of Clever Mirage.

I think it's probably the ammo.

I had the same problem. Polished the chamber as described and that fixed it. Sometimes (but rarely) the winchester shells will jam. I have no issue with federal shells.
