I've never changed the forestock on an 870 remington.
I have ordered a hogue set and want to change both.
How hard is the forestock to do and what is involved?

You should get the tool for taking it off etc. There will lots of info here saying there are ways and means of taking it off and re installing and that is great except if you are a cluts like me and want to f--k it up.
 
you need a forend wrench that fits the 870. the same wrench will fit the mossberg 500,ithaca 37,BPS, and win 1300/1200.they are available from brownells but the cheaoer route is to have your local gunsmith do it.

Taking it to a gunsmith isn't the best idea in this case, they'll probably charge you for the work if you don't deal with them often. The change-out job is incredibly easy anyway, the proper tool is preferred but far from necessary, just use needle nose pliers for the job or do what I did and make your own tool.
 
If you are a clumsy oaf - take it to a smith.

If you are a person with even a modicum of technical aptitude - do it yourself. Seriously, it's a tough as removing a nut and sliding the forend off. The forend tool may help, but if you're only using it once or twice, it's easier just to make one (or adapt something to work - not hard).
 
if the collar has been on for a while and you try to use needle nose pliers and they slip, like they quite often do, then you've marked the metal. i've seen a fair few done like that.to buy a forend wrench and have it shipped from brownells ,cost $22.00 plus tax plus shipping and handling yada yada. i only said gunsmith if he wasn't sure about not being able to do it without marking his gun. i don't know if the collar is free to turn or if it's rusted or what it's like.
 
Get a piece of pipe with the inside diameter slightly larger than the outside diameter of the magazine. File the pipe end down so that you leave 2 opposing "teats" that will engage in the slots on the forend nut. Drill a cross hole through the pipe at the other end so that you can put a metal bar or screwdriver through it to help turn the pipe. Works like a charm if you have the time to do it.

I used a piece of aluminum bar stock that I had in my gun room, it must have been a good karma thing because it was the right width and thickness for a perfect fit.

I made my own tool from a piece of pipe similar to what gunrunner100 said, and it's nice to know that it will fit all those other guns as well:D
