870 jam

part of the problem is at the factory. we're only talking 1/1000 to 1/10000 of an inch in machining tolerances. the mass production line is what it is. say after reaming out 350 chambers the reamer starts to get dull, more pressure has to be exerted and the chamber comes out 1/1000 " larger than standard. that could be the reason that some brass splits.but only rarely. the vast majority of guns this will never happen to. but that's one of the differnces between our regular mass produced shotguns (and they're fine) for $750.00 to $2000.00 and a james a. purdy & sons for $150,000.00

Forget the Purdy ($150000), because if you can afford that, you ain't shopping at Wal Mart.

i can't afford a purdy!!! used as an example. i wish i could. i don't think the 870 is going downhill at all. this always happened on occasion, but 15 years ago we couldn't get on a forum like this and talk about it. the 870 was and is one of the best made pumps on the market. don't care what anybody says, the good old days for guns are right now!!

I would measure carefully the thickness and the diamer of the rim of the shell. I had a similar problem with an Ithaca M37 PA and the problem was with the rim dimensions of the shell (cheap CTC shells).

A combination of these dimensions and the dimensions/stiffness of your extractor might be a factor. A variation in rim dimension might not affect all guns of similar make but an easy test would be to try different ammo.

Good luck!

I had a 18" 870. Always used shooting practice ammo since I bought it and there was no single problem to use those ammo. But last week I bought couple box of winchester 12 gauge heavy load #7 ammo to try out, it jams a lot. There is a jam almost every two shot.

why is that, because of the heavy load or something else? Did it happen to you guys?

Add: shot shell can't be ejected
I had the same problem on my 870 Super Express Magnum. Using 2 3/4" Winchester target loads, it wouldn't eject the round after discharge, and I had to hold the release lever in while pounding the butt on the ground. Not the safest way to eject, but in the field it's the only way. I switched to 3" Kent and never had an issue there.

Finally wised up and went with the Beretta Field AL391. Nice weapon! If anyone ever asks what you want for X-mas, put this baby at the top of your list!

Like I've said before. The 3 1/2" 12ga is a cure for a non existant problem.

If you need more shot, go 10ga.

I've seen quite a few problems with the 3 1/2" 870's, and they are all related to ammo that's 2 3/4" and sometimes 3".

I have a 870 express mag, chambered for 2 3/4, 3" and have a problem with those winchester shells. and my little brother has one chambered for the 3 1/2 inch and he has the same issue.. however the winchester amo is the only type we have ever had a single jam on.. We both have put well over 1000 rounds throu each, and not a single jam unless useing the winchester target loads. we just keep away from them now, and either use the Remington or kent rounds.

My buddies 870 3.5 inch chamber DIDN'T like the xpert steel 3.5 shells... My benelli nova shot them fine... So, just switch to a different shell... My guess is that will solve the problem, like others have indicated on this thread also...

Cheers

I've shot $50 cases of no name shells, Rio taget loads, Fedral target loads, Winchester target loads, Remington gun club target loads, Challenger 3", Remington Nitro in 3" and 3.5", OOOOOOOOOOLD Mastercraft 2 3/4 shells and who knows what else. My 870 Super Mag cycles everything fine.

My friend's 870 will cycle ANYTHING, but he laughs his A** off when mine jams on the same ammo. I guess it's the 20 year difference between when his was made, and when mine was.
