I have an older 870 Wingmaster that I just bought, and when I disassembled it, the locking block assembly within the bolt simply falls out. On my Marine Magnum, there is a pin that prevents this from happening. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that there is no provision for a pin on the older assembly, unlike the newer Marine Magnum bolt. The Wingmaster fires, cycles and ejects fine. Did Remington originally manufacture the bolts with locking block assemblies that came apart when removed from the gun? If so, what prompted the change to the retaining pin?

That's interesting,
I am not an expert or armorer so can't say for sure but I have taken apart about a hundred new and up to very old 870s and never seen one like that

I'll post some pics - maybe I didn't see the broken pin - what are the potential problems if it was supposed to have the pin and doesn't?
**Here's some pictures - I don't see any signs of a broken pin - honestly, the bolt itself doesn't even have the slot for a pin...the slot you see is up way too high for the pin. The walls on the inside of the bolt are flat with no place for a pin to catch like on the other 870 bolts I have here...

In the beginning around 1950........................... When Remington first made the 870, there was no little pin. The gun functions as designed without it.

The problem is without the pin ... after disassembly and reassembly the locking block can be inadvertantly left out. Now imagine firing a 12 guage without a locking block. You get the picture. The pin is in the locking block to keep it in the breech bolt to prevent accidents.

You will find the barrel date code on the left hand side of the chamber area of barrel on the 870's. Arwen ace is esentialy correct but there were also some that were designed to hold the locking bolt in place with the installed firing pin. It would seem that there was a problem with this design as they soon dropped it and went to the retaining pin. Go here to read your barrel code http://www.remingtonsociety.com/questions/BLACKPOWDERX.htm. Rod

I do not have the original barrel, only the receiver and mag tube. The old Wingmaster looks a little different than it did when it came out of the factory...it's the top gun. Funny thing too, the newer 870's have the serial number near the middle of the receiver; this one has it nearer the front...
