Spending some time with my 3 inch 28 gauge sxs . Got the itch to build something different . Looking at chambering a 28 gauge Rem870 LW pump for 28 gauge 3 inch shells. The 870 LW has been my favorite upland gun for years I have done several 12 gauge conversions I even converted a 12 gauge 870 over to 16 gauge all worked out well. The 3" 28 gauge handloads have been interesting on the pattern board with all types of shot. The 28 conversion will require a forcing cone mod a ejector spring change and a shortened ejecter or a 3" 410 replacement . I am going for Briley steel shot thinwalls and will get them to do the forcing cone rather than buying a cone reamer. Other than the Briley chokes and reamer this is a low cost mod. Am I crazy yes I am.

Always admire people that have the ability and will to build "what they want". I have a 870 28g not in 3" but find it a very nice piece and for what I paid for it it (less than my 2 new Browning chokes) it will stay in my possession. :)

A most interesting project. Was just thinking the other day that there was no 3 inch 28 gauge pump available, off the top of my head.:)

At present, I do not have a 3 inch 28 gauge, but will at some point in time. When you hand load your 28 gauge 3 inch ammunition do you reset your 2 3/4 inch or do you have one each set up for 2 3/4 and 3 inch?

Don't have a loader set up for the 3 '" shell yet but I will I have a extra 12 gauge MEC kicking around most likely that will be converted to the 28 gauge 3 " shell. I have been using new hulls and roll crimping . which works well but you don't get a lot of reloads with a roll crimp. I use a roll crimp to salvage beat up hulls 2 3/4 to 2 1/2 inch and the 3 " to 2 3/4 " and if you want to get really frugal to 2 1/2 " . Getting to be a MAD HATTER in my old age.

You are really are into getting the most out of your hulls. That's for sure.LOL Nothing wrong with that.:)

Any idea when you might start your 28 gauge 3 inch conversion project?

What have you been shooting for 3 inch 28 gauge and what results have you been having?I take it they have patterned well for you?

I do see that Akkar makes a 28 gauge pump 3 inch .Did not know that .

Here is a link to some Kent 28 gauge 3 inch Bismuth 1 1/16 ounce loads, available in Canada. Not cheap, but available.:)
